Based on the trade data, Canada would likely be in a worse position in a trade war with the United States. Here's why:\n\n1. Canada sends approximately 75% of its total exports to the US, while the US only sends about 18% of its exports to Canada. This creates a significant asymmetry in dependency.\n\n2. The US economy (around $27 trillion) is roughly 13 times larger than Canada's economy (about $2.1 trillion), giving the US more cushion to absorb economic shocks.\n\n3. he US typically runs a trade deficit with Canada (approximately $135 billion in goods in 2023), which means Canada sells more to the US than it buys, making Canadian producers more vulnerable to US tariffs.\n\n4. The US has more diversified export markets globally, while Canada is heavily reliant on the US market.\n\nThat said, a trade war would harm both countries:\n\n- Highly integrated supply chains, especially in automotive manufacturing, would be disrupted\n- Border regions in the US would face significant economic impacts\n- US consumers would face higher prices for Canadian goods (energy, raw materials)\n- Specific US industries dependent on Canadian inputs would face challenges\n\nWhile Canada would likely face more severe macroeconomic consequences, a trade war would ultimately be lose-lose, damaging industries and consumers on both sides of the border.

I can't stand CNN = Communist News Network, and I don't care for Trueau but I'm going to have to stand with him on this. Trump is being absolutely rediculous that is going to hurt the poor and working class poor in both countries, Canada as well as America. I sincerely appologize to the Canadian people because my President who said he would make America great again has instead lost his mind and has went off on some insane tangent that will not hurt him or his rich friends (On both sides of the political fence).....Now Mexico that is where the garbage is coming from.

Canada responding puts Canada in a worse position. \n Canada not helping in the fight against fentanyl is obviously false, that being said the mass Immigration policy of Justen trued has made it easy for cartels' to smuggle in narcotics, not only that but the immigrants cause waves of crime, rippling from generation to generation. which hurts Canadians quite a bit. Immigration from the US to Canada would not hurt Canadians as much as from all the third world countries that they currently have their immigration system setup to accept. \nCanada's official statistics for narcotics coming in cannot be trusted. there is the fact that when someone is caught with narcotics they don't actually get to bring in those drugs. \nCanada's border is also entirely bypassed by plane so it doesn't matter how strong they make their borders.\nthe best response to the tariffs would be to remove all those god awful restrictions put in place on Canadian enterprise.

As a Brit... I've been to Canada many times (the first time as a soldier in 1981) and of late in the likes of BC, I've fished there. Love, love, love Canada and the Canadians. I've been to America too, and I love it there also. And while I'm not always a good judge of people...I flatter myself I'm a VERY good judge of character. And oh man, have they ever got it wrong with this Trump fella. Now there's a bloke I would not like to find myself in a combat situation since he'd likely shoot me in the back and run the other way. I just find myself asking how on earth it has come to this. How can they possibly think that a person such as this is a fit bloke to lead their country. Hitler? Don't talk to me about Hitler America. Honestly, it would make you want to weep...

What makes Donald Trump think Canada would want any part of this shit storm current Trump‘s first term the Canadian immigration website crashed as people were trying to be out of here. Canada definitely has more sensible leadership why our country is led by a grifter who has turned a lot of sensible and educated Americans into zombies or should I say he’s like the big bully on the playground someone should’ve told Donald Trump that you get more flies with honey than vinegar

Trudeau was right when he said it was dumb. The US tariffs are simply about bringing America to its knees and destroying America. That is why the country is being recklessly run. The idea is to destroy the American way of life and America. Have you seen a 3rd world country run. The fighting and the division in the 3rd world country? The events over the past weeks are not about efficiency. 1 worker doing 15 people's jobs. Who is running the government? Tariffs are one more thing to destroy America. US government federal workers all let go, paying government employees pennies on the dollars and lying to the American public about efficiency, farmers and textile workers that voted are stranded without jobs, social security being destroyed, programs being destroyed, Americans being lied to, Americans being taken advantage of due to poor knowledge and education, education being taken away and putting un-elected immigrants/foreigners to run/destroy America. Yes, the Tariffs are one more thing to put Americans in the street, turn off their electricity, take away their heating system, and make America into a poor 3rd world country. Trudeau and Canada are protecting its workers - federal and private and yes, all of Canada. Canada is United. Americans better find Unity like the Canadians are doing versus worrying about who voted Red or Blue.

Trudeau should be the last person to talk about making sense. Emboldened Khalistanis, encouraged illegal immigration, took the country down the tube. Radicals burning Canadian flag in the heart of Canada in pro- Palestine rallies. What step has he taken about it? At least Trump is “America first” president. Trudeau on the other hand is “everthing at expense of Canada”! Hopefully with right wing in administration in Canada, Trump will deescalate this. But all bets are off with him. \nAnyway, USA will never have Canada. People sacrificed themselves defending Canada’s sovreignty in the past. We will never give up Canada to anyone.

Canada's electric rates to the US were and are ridiculously high. The us cities have been telling the Canadians that for 30 years. The US has and will make up the short falls in energy for sure.

When Canadians boo the American National anthem at sporting events, please understand we love the people of the United States. It is the policies of your president that we are upset about. It is one of the ways the general public can make our voice heard on the world stage. We want the same things, strong economy, safe streets but this has gone too far. This is an excuse to force Canada to become the so called 51st state. America is beautiful, but dump the Trump. ?

Canada...please, for the love of yourself, do NOT forget what this man did to Canada. Sure, now, he can look like a hero...but he doesn't give a rats ass about Canada...this is his last ditch effort to save grace (and his liberals) from the destruction they have caused each & everyone of us Canadians for the umten years that have passed.\n\nOn voting day, remember that...and let's get the right guy in place...MCFA ?? If I could afford to move from the US to Canada I would move. I am so sick of Trump’s destructive behavior. He’s a very insecure and unhappy person and the only way he can deal with it is by making others miserable. He doesn’t need reasons for implementing new tariffs. He does these things to demonstrate his power, because he’s a class A bully. Canadians, stay strong. We’ll see you this summer when we =action in BC. Your country is clean, safe and the people are so nice.

I effectively spent a chunk of my childhood in America with relatives. I treasured these memories, but now all the feelings of wonder and happiness when thinking of my visits to America have faded. Now I just think of how selfish it was to sabotage Canada. American private equities want to rock our system and buy up all they can and so I am happy we are watching for this. I think Donald did this to try and buy up Canadian companies. This should be made illegal. I am willing to suffer for up to pull the plug on all resources and energy going to America “suddenly” do they have no time to adapt and collectively suffer. We even produce the ingredient you need for your nuclear weapons and otherwise need to get this from Russia. Canada has the ability to help our allies get nuclear weapons to protect against “America as our #1 enemy now”. Will we share too secret info with you when Trump clearly seems to be working with Russia? Putin dream for NATO to break down and now Trump ours that I to action . Trump wants everyone to spend money on military to fuel the American military industrial complex, something each and every huge tech company you have participated. You have essentially been taken over by a global entity that doesn’t care about democracy. We are going to manufacture our own weapons to have zero dependency on America. That makes no sense to buy weapons from the country threatening to invade you. \n\nHow will America feel to be totally alone in the global stage all under the power of one unstable man with multiple personality disorders. Trump things Putin is Americas friend and meanwhile in Russian media America spoken of as enemy number one. Meanwhile, America is 30% full of people with such little education in politics that they do not even know what is considered red flags to democracy. The 20% needed to shift will see the light once the worst man made intentional recession begins and the billionaires buy up 30% of your homes and buildings. Nothing at all will be outside of billionaire and corporate control and now all your data is in AI. how did all American value fall in just one month. Anyone not questioning this now, ai promise you is being blackmailed or is corrupt. \n\nThe bureaucracy prevents dictatorship. Now Trump is removing this. Just listen to project 2025. America is fully on track.

At this present time and in this current governmental climate, I do believe that changing a leader now would hurt Canada. Trudeau has first hand experience and has dealt with Trump and his tantrums, this isn’t Trudeau’s first rodeo. I am concerned with Trump antics another leader could be influenced with charm and falsehoods which Trudeau has already confidently stood up against.\nAnd for a moment, let’s think a little bit further out of the box. This isn’t about fentanyl as Prime minster Trudeau pointed out. This is about making life for Canadians extremely difficult and chaotic. It’s to bring division between the United States and Canada, and with Trump joking and jokes are not jokes sometimes they become reality Canada being a 51st state. Trump Being friends with Putin, with Russian ships in our Arctic Ocean think on this for a minute. Putin decided to invade Ukraine to expand his make believe empire. President Trump and Vladimir Putin working together. Hasn’t Trump said he wants Canada to be part of the USA and wants our Prime Minister to be a governor how insulting. How very insulting to the Canadian people who not just live in Canada, but are also united Canadians.

I’m a 53 year old Canadian. I went to college on an athletic scholarship & lived there for 10 years after turned professional in my sport. Why, why, why - with all the problems going on in the world right now to tackle - why would you want to start a trade war with your closest trading partner & most loyal ally? Not to mention that your list of Allies is shrinking daily. This is not going to end well for either of us. \nI just arrived home from a trip to the grocery store - making sure nothing in my cart said “ made in the USA” on it due to the new tariffs that began today. \nThe irony is, many of the states where Trump won by the biggest margin, are the states that are going to get hit the hardest from Canadian retaliation tariffs ( Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana, the Dakotas - just to name a few). A lot of farmers in those states are going to be hit extremely hard with the fertilizer tax. After Canada, the next 3 largest Potash producers are Russia, Belarus & China. So , good luck \nWhen the cost of fruit & vegetables skyrocket across the US. Maybe you’ll put a little more thought into your vote 4 years from now.

I am embarrassed to be Canadian. Trump is doing everything and anything to make America and the American people better. He is not responsible for canada. All we do here is whine and get into a well if you do this we're gonna do that pissing contest. Instead of us here in Canada doing anything to make Canada stronger and us not reliant on handouts. We got that little brother syndrome where we wanna be like big brother but don't have any power

Trump is trying to end war that’s why he wants to make peace with Russia! And there are a LOT of rude Canadians just as Americans! I don’t think Canada and America ever been allies or close friends HONESTLY speaking! But what Trudeau is making a point, this will not go well for everyone! Wow this handsome man knows French as well! How smart of him!

I'm sorry our Canadian's fellows, this is not personal, it's just business. All this year the USA economy has been decreased because we buy (importing) more goods than selling (exporting). We are no in good shape economically to support other countries' economies. We need companies to come back to produce in the USA and those extra charges are an incentive to start producing again in the USA. After our economy is better, we can make new deals.
\nAbout Fentanyl, it is funny that he said that it was all good and after that, saying just in the last months implemented all kinds of security measures. LOL
\nHe speaks nice, but he is not a smart guy. Putting tariffs back to the USA makes it worse with Donald Trump. Donald Trump is a businessman, he can keep increasing the taxes and in the end, Canada will be hurt more than the USA. I suggest to peacefully open a negotiation with Trump, not to fight back at the same level... don't take it personally, it is just business.

I'm a Canadian. I am trying to wrap my head around why a President would start a trade war by imposing tariffs that hurt their allies and hurt his own people..!? I am not an economist nor an investor; However I found it interesting that the immediate result of this as they corresponded about this news is how the markets are taking a major dive. If I wanted to make money off the stock market and had no morals and had the power to cause it to crash, I would make sure it crashed hard by imposing tariffs. Then I would invest as many billions in the key stocks that will come back, and watch my billions turn into 10's or 100's of billions...\nThe other possible explanation could simply be that he wants all the critical minerals from Canada, Greenland, Ukraine for nothing. Taking those minerals for free and selling electric cars, miliatary equipment, etc. would be most profitable!\nBut greed seems to know no bounds for those who are wealthy, as long as it's at their gain and not at their expense!

Justin is a true leader, well spoken, intelligent, i support Canada, i will make sure to support and buy Canadian products
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
The United States is BANKRUPT! That is the only reason that makes sense why Trump needs tariffs on product from other countries (Trump Needs to have his people buy American). The USA needs all the money spent on themselves rather than on foreign products. This is also why Trump is pulling a Putin by trying to invade friendly countries, Even this action is to try to force Canada to become part of the United States so that they will own and Control our natural resources. The thing that the USA forgets is Canadians are Proud and Resistant to threats. We will remember this for a long time and even if this ILLEGAL ACTION works you will gain 40 MILLION TERRORISTS Hell bent on killing all Americans!
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
Who benefits from this? him! he gets to blame Canada when American prices go up and his supporters will not need or want to hear the truth, they'll be willfully ignorant. If he genuinly admires Putin he'd love nothing more than a Belarus of his own to compare notes with at their little bromance dates! Sad thing is im not trying to make any kind of joke, i really believe he would love that\n\nI'm in UK. Stay strong Canada we love you. Swapping OUT any US products i Possibly can (family too). Also going to look for and swap IN any Canadian produts we can \n\ni cant find emoji flag on this keyboard but imagine Many Canadian flags, hearts a Welsh flag a Union Jack and even more Canadian

Heads Up! Elon Musk's mother was Canadian. Why does the president push for the 51st state? Goldwater ran against Johnson for president and because he was born in Arizona when it was a territory, eventually to become a state, The commentators said Goldwater could become president. So, if the USA were to make Canada the 51st state . . . Elon Musk could become president. Reality Check X.

Paula Newton, you’re correct, how dare Trudeau talks to US citizens directly or addresses “Donald” directly, after Canadians have been told we’d make a great 51st State and our Right Honourable Prime Minister has been called a “governor”!\n\nThe AUDACITY!\n\nElbows Up, Canada!
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
All you idiots that praise Justin Trudeau are not Canadians. This POS is the reason that Canada's middle class is now poor and suffering. There's no worse person than a liberal who talks nice but makes empty promises. Our cost of living is through the roof, our economy is tanked, our infrastructure is 30 years behind. We have now become a third world country thanks to clowns like this.

Canada’s 25% Tariffs? A Win for American Businesses in the Long Run\n\nAt first glance, Canada slapping a 25% tariff on U.S. goods might seem like a negative for America. But in reality, this move could actually work in our favor by making the U.S. economy stronger, more self-sufficient, and less dependent on foreign markets.\n\t1.\tBoosting American Manufacturing & Production – When Canada makes U.S. goods more expensive with tariffs, American businesses have a huge opportunity to shift focus to domestic markets and new trade partners. This could bring more production back home and reduce reliance on Canada.\n\t2.\tEncouraging Trade Diversification – The U.S. isn’t limited to Canada. If they want to play hardball, we can expand exports to other countries with fewer trade restrictions. Canada makes up about 15% of U.S. exports, but the rest of the world is wide open. This is a chance to diversify and strengthen our economy.\n\t3.\tMaking Canada Pay More for U.S. Goods – Tariffs don’t just hurt exporters—they also raise costs for Canadian consumers. If Canada wants American products, they’ll end up paying more or have to settle for alternatives that might be lower quality or more expensive from other countries.\n\t4.\tStrengthening America’s Negotiating Position – If Canada wants to raise tariffs, that gives the U.S. even more leverage in future trade talks. The U.S. economy is far larger and more powerful than Canada’s, and in the long run, they need us more than we need them.\n\t5.\tReducing America’s Trade Deficit – If fewer goods are exported to Canada, that means more products stay in the U.S. This helps lower dependence on foreign markets and could even stabilize prices for American consumers.\n\nBottom Line: Canada’s Move Hurts Them More Than It Hurts the U.S.\n\nIf Canada wants to put tariffs on U.S. goods, let them. In the long run, it pushes America to be more self-reliant, strengthens our industries, and forces Canada to pay the price for their own policies.\n\nAt the end of the day, America has the stronger economy, better resources, and more trade options—Canada needs U.S. trade more than we need theirs. If they want to make American goods more expensive, they’ll feel it a lot more than we will.

Trudeau is the epitome of western society's moral decay, under his leadership Canada has become a radical third world country, from gay marriage to state sponsored marihuana, to state sponsored gambling that floods the country. As a result, Canada today is the bedrock and safe haven for criminals, while ordinary Canadian people's lives continually decline, especially the working class who are struggling yet still cannot make ends meet. A lot of Canadians either have moved to the US, or they would like for Canada to be part of the US so that they have some hope. I am sorry for the Canadian people but have no sympathy for Trudeau.
|

Why hi is still there? He is nobody and most Canadians hate him. Canada need different person to make a deal with Trump, not this one.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
I live by the Canadian border. It is NOT easy to cross. Trump is lying and just trying to make himself look good even knowing tht Canada is willing to be a partner in combating illegal drugs. He wanted to get his court problems etc off his table. He had to get elected. And ELON helped that. Without Elon the shadow president he wouldn't have. Hell Elon had to pay people to vote for him.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
From Canada, and reading the comments is truly heartfelt. Trudeau gets a pretty polarizing reputation in our country, but to know the world sees him as more reputable and more of a leader makes me proud to be Canadian and to stay positive in these chaotic times. Thank you

Canada, tell me: What is the difference between an assistant drama teacher and a smart person? A drama teacher will fight a losing battle against an economic giant that doesn't need Canada as much as Canada needs him. For Americans, the high cost of Canadian goods will just make them turn to non-Canadian substitute products; for Canadians, we cannot help but buy US products despite the higher costs because we don't have a lot of alternatives. In the long run, Canada will cave in and become the 51st State. Why don't we skip the hardship part and just go straight to where we become part of an economic giant!
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
How is he defending Canadian jobs? The whole point of tarrifs is to make it unprofitable for American companies to use Canada for things like manufacturing, energy and other natural resources.\n\nThe liberal government is who made us weak where we depended on the trade deficit in our favour. If we looked at tapping our resources and finding other markets, we wouldn't be so far gone.\n\nTrudeau's answer? EI? More taxpayer debt?\n\nHe's trying to use this situation to garner support from the public. We're screwed.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
I'm sorry about this viscous & needless act! I'm an American & I understand completely why Canadian's are upset. I also understand why you're going to retaliate, if you didn't, then I'd question your leadership. Canada has to do what's right for its people and Americans will understand why Canada has to do whatever it has to do for its People and Country. Trump's plan to make Canada the 51st State is by putting economic pressure on Canada until it can't stand anymore. This is his plan and now you can prepare Canadians for the fight ahead. God Bless Canada!!!

Oh no maple syrup ............nooooo . Have any of you Canadians looked into what Canada imports vs exports .......... remeber all those new green deal garbage is out the window here in the USA, so lumber is going back up , mining , etc . Just because our countries are next to each other doesn't make us neighbors......... your country has allowed trahs polices to over ride your citizen rights, you've filled your country with migrants , you support crazy sick policies allowing sexual perversion to be put before public saftey . If your countries economy is so effected by this maybe you need this , got a little to relaxed riding tr he coat tails of being next to America. And don't take it personal , this isn't about you as a country but more about American calling out americna companies who build factories only your side , get great deals for taxes and then import the products back to American at a premium retail price and then profit off the American people while offering nothing back .........the end goal is to either make thise companies pay more to get products over the boarder , or bring the factories back here and employee americans .........and last I check the Canadian government doesn't own or produce any products so the things that will be imported to usa will be the ones with a cost rise to the companies that are producing them ........ them............

Trudeau is on his way out. Has five days left in office. He is very unpopular on both sides in Canada due to the state of things in Canada that have nothing to do with Trump. Obviously Americans commenting here aren’t aware of that. \n\nThe last thing most Canadians want Trudeau to do is publicly agitate Trump and make things difficult for the next prime minister.

Autarky and Autocracy, Dicktatoes and Dickhead Economics, hand in hand.\nI urge Canada to seek maximum assistance from all those who LOVE Canada, Canadians, Canadian Products that have so benefitted this world of ours.\nAutarky never works - IT CANNOT STAND FOR LONG.\n\n1. North Korea (Juche Policy)\nNorth Korea's commitment to Juche (self-reliance) has led to severe economic stagnation and recurring famines, most notably in the 1990s, when an estimated 600,000–3 million people died due to food shortages.\nThe lack of trade and foreign investment has stifled technological progress and industrial growth.\nNorth Korea is now heavily dependent on China for food, fuel, and economic support despite its official autarkic stance.\n2. Albania under Enver Hoxha (1944–1992)\nHoxha's regime pursued extreme isolationism, severing ties with both the Soviet Union and China.\nThe economy collapsed due to lack of trade, modern technology, and external investment.\nBy the late 1980s, Albania was one of the poorest and most backward countries in Europe, with widespread shortages of food, medicine, and basic goods.\n3. Spain under Franco (1940s–1950s)\nFrancisco Franco initially pursued autarquía after the Spanish Civil War, aiming to make Spain self-sufficient.\nThe policy resulted in economic stagnation, black markets, food shortages, and a declining standard of living.\nBy the 1950s, Franco was forced to abandon autarky in favor of liberalization and foreign investment, which led to the later Spanish Miracle of rapid economic growth.\n4. Argentina under Juan Perón (1946–1955)\nPerón aimed for economic independence through import substitution and state control of industries.\nInitially, Argentina benefited from post-war trade surpluses, but as reserves dwindled and industry struggled without external competition, inflation and inefficiencies mounted.\nThe economy ultimately deteriorated, forcing a shift back to trade and foreign investment.\n5. Maoist China (1950s–1970s)\nMao Zedong’s push for self-sufficiency, particularly during the Great Leap Forward, led to disastrous economic consequences.\nAgricultural mismanagement and isolationist policies contributed to the Great Chinese Famine (1959–1961), causing an estimated 15–45 million deaths.\nChina only saw major economic improvement after opening up to global trade under Deng Xiaoping’s reforms in the late 1970s.

Looks like Trumps goal here is to bring Canada to its knees ( Trump is even trying to get Russian Aluminium to replace Canadian Alumininium) so he can make Canada go broke and beg to become the 51st state of the USA
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
I was glad that not too long ago... Trump actually did say the truth to the American people: Canada imports 95% of it's goods from the USA... with us refusing to buy American, with all of us buying Canadian or International products instead... how will he be making America great again ?? By bankrupting the country ?? Does he thinks that 25% tariffs will make Canadians shake in their pants and all of a sudden want to be the 51st State ?? No, it's just like bringing us back to the days before NAFTA. We were able to live back then and we will be able to now as well.
|

Speaking the truth. I'ma nationalistic American and Canadian PM Trudeau is speaking the truth that we all wanna hear after what our own US president did to ruin America and make our lives worse. I fully support Canada now.
|

Canadians are already crying thats why this guy resigned. I dont know what will chage for them as a result of tariff. Economy is bad, inflation is high and people cannot make their ends meet. So stop this useless rant and get on with your lives, and do what is necessary to make Canada great again.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
So let me get this straight...Canada can shun American products by making them more expensive but doesn't like it when the US makes Canadian products more expensive.

I have lived in Canada for almost 50 years.. The United States of America has been our closest neighbour and friend ever since I came here.. \nLong before I came here Canada and the US were partners… \nWe relied on each other, we supported each other and we profited from each other..\nLet me make it perfectly clear I consider myself Canadian and I love the Americans like they were my own brothers and sisters.. \nAlso let it be known that our government does not speak for the citizens of this country… \nWe are being forced by the government to follow the rules. And now our government wants the American people to believe that all Canadians are against them. \nThat couldn’t be any further from the truth. \nI can’t say every single Canadian has respect for the Americans, but I myself respect America and honour Canada.. \nAs a true Canadian, we stand on guard for both countries.. God bless America…

I'm an American and support the actions Canadians are taking to secure the border between Canada and the United States. I did not vote for Trump this time but to my disappointment he won the election and now we have to deal with him his administration and the issues he is causing. I only pray we will make it through this.

Thank you emphasizing the role of municipalities in this. Unlike other jurisdictions, in Canada municipalities are responsible for all transport infrastructure and utility infrastructure with the exception of major provincial highways, airports, and electricity and gas distribution systems. Meanwhile, Canadian municipalities can only levy property taxes and no income or sales taxes. Thus, Canadian municipalities governments are very attached to property owners, leading to the political conditions that make housing harder to build and new housing more expensive. The vast majority of the policies restricting housing supply and increasing costs of new housing, like development charges on new homes to fund infrastructure instead of taxing existing property owners, onerous and restrictive zoning regulations, and slow and expensive permitting processes all come from the cities. Honestly, for many city politicians it is to their advantage to make the crisis worse. Why wouldn’t a city councillor vote to raise development charges on building new homes instead of raising property taxes on existing homes to pay for stuff like replacing life expired sewer and road and subway infrastructure!? His constituents aren’t going to care about the costs of new homes, which affect people moving to the city or younger generations, which are either not yet residents of the city or too young to vote.
