What I've heard from some of my friends is that they don't care if democracy is gone as long as their taxes go down. They want a lower income tax bracket. They're very single minded about issues. We'll see how we fair once you have to pay more at the pump, when the price of electronics go up, when produce and beef, pork, and chicken become unaffordable. Yes, the middle and upper middle class probably don't care, but the lower classes and the already poor are not going to be happy. Once people are hungry, then you'll see people on the street. I voted for Trump, but it's hard not to agree with Trudeau on this even though I find this guy to be extremely unpleasant. There's no reason to start trade wars all over the world and in particular with our neighbors. It's one thing to threaten tariffs and a very different thing to actually apply them. If you do it has to be accompanied by a lot of diplomacy so that the other country is not overreacting, but Trump has been super combative prompting our neighbors to respond in kind to save face. While past deals may not have been great for US, this is not the way to handle our differences. Billionaires like Trump and his friends will be fine, but the majority of ordinary folks in the US and Canada will suffer. Very dumb, indeed.

I will be the first to admit, Canada has not done enough in terms of its own security and military, but these failures should not be the decay in our friendship as nations. The US DOES NOT subsidize Canada, it DOES NOT give money to Canada. In simple terms- the larger country, with the largest economy in the world (USA) buys more from its Northern brother, which produces vast amounts of natural resources which the larger southern country requires. As for the booing seen at most recent sports events in Canada, that is directed at the President, not the average American. I myself would never boo a national anthem, an anthem that millions have sacrificed to protect and defend. But I understand the pain and anger that is coming from my country. We have always been allies, friends, and to most even family. As a Canadian from one of the best educational programs in the country, that produces the countries smartest engineers, and CS grads. I can say most of my friends plan to leave Canada in the long term or after Graduation.

However, we have one key advantage over our friends to the south, and one I hope that over time this will increasingly bear fruit: we are not governed by a fascist-adjacent government. Our only political party with policies resembling the American Republicans is polling in the low single digits.\n\nSetting aside the question of whether American Republicans are 'fascist-adjacent', the truth is that much of the world perceives it as such. Our economy is so tied to the US that I would not wish them ill, or at least not very much. However, I think in the competition for talent American politics will be like a 'mark of Cane' on that country for a generation. My guess is that our - in comparison - boring politics will be a key advantage in the years to come.
