The opposite is more likely to be true: in countries with a trade surplus, more people are unemployed. This was shown by the Peterson Institute. \n \nTrump's tariffs are more dangerous for the economy, because they reduce imports and exports, partly because other countries in turn impose punitive tariffs in response. Trump's announced import tariffs during his first term even led to a larger trade deficit and to 7.2 billion dollars in welfare losses in the US.

As a South African, I want to say that this trade war, as well as the hostile approach of Trump towards Canada, is devastating. If one were not experiencing it directly, it would be almost impossible to believe. This is such a remarkable speech that it will go down in history as one of the truly great speeches in times of crisis. It is entirely correct to address the American and Canadian peoples directly, as the Prime Minister has done. They are both clear victims of this madness, Americans misled, and Canadians the target, of this senseless trade war. If one reads History, there is another dimension to this, and I hate to say it. Canadians have to prepare themselves for worse. I’m in Seattle and have a vacation home in British Columbia so go there often while renting out other days to other people. Wonder how the tariffs gonna affect this. For example if certain things need to be remodeled in my pad over in BC I usually order from suppliers in USA near the border since I use them for my home in Seattle too. I’m guessing it might get taxed now. Not sure how it will play out. I do know that initially tariffs gonna effect lot of people but do believe in general it will get economy better. I recently saw that Mexico been adding tariffs for years for certain USA goods (for example appliances purchased in usa from Mexico will cost another 27% etc) and it’s time for USA do similar things. Just hoping my burrito cost doesn’t keep going up. Was around 8$ several years back and now it’s 14$ in Seattle ?
