I'm Canadian. I was born here, raised here, and have lived here all my life. However, my parents are American (they came during the Vietnam war), and I have full dual citizenship. I could cross the border into the U.S., get a job, start working and live there for the rest of my life if I ever chose to do so.\n\nHowever, I will never live in the U.S. Why? The cost of healthcare insurance and healthcare in general is definitely a part of that, but another huge factor is the socio-political atmosphere down there that is very unappealing to me. Everything from politics, the gun issue, much higher violence than we have in Canada, more racism issues, the media, and from what I have observed from decades of visits to the U.S.: there just seems to be a lot more people that are on edge and hostile than I am used to compared to Canada as well. For me, the general culture and mindset is just not something I want to live amongst.\n\nThere are some things I enjoy in the U.S., and there ARE wonderful people there too. I have several friends in the U.S. (born and raised), not to mention my entire extended family is American. But for me, the U.S. is a nice enough place to visit, but it's not somewhere I'd ever want to live.\n\nNo matter what kind of trip I take to the U.S., whenever I get back home to Canada it's always like a deep sigh of relief. I feel safer. I feel more relaxed. I feel at home. No matter how good my trip was, when I set foot back on Canadian soil again I always get a feeling of humble gratitude that I live here. For me, other than the warmer weather and some of the sights the U.S. has to offer, I'm much, much happier in Canada. I feel very fortunate to live here.\n\nAs a side note, I have never found our public healthcare system here in Canada to be lacking whatsoever. Any healthcare I, or anyone else I know that has received any, has always been prompt, of excellent quality, and reassuringly delivered in a professional manner.\n\nAs an example, in 1994, my father had a seizure and it was discovered that he had a benign brain tumour that had to be removed. Not even a week later, he was booked for his surgery and he had his procedure. He was operated on by one of the top two neurosurgeons in North America at the time, he spent three weeks in recovery at the hospital, and he had months of rehab afterward. About 2 weeks later, he had another seizure (the last one he ever had), he stayed in another hospital for an additional two weeks.\n\nHowever, all of what I just mentioned, and I mean ALL of it, was paid for by our public healthcare system. All he had to do was show his healthcare card and sign a release form for his surgery, and that was it. Nothing more. There were literally ZERO bills, no insurance companies, no paperwork, no phone calls, and ZERO hassle. Nothing.\n\nAnd no, our family was NOT rich or privileged either. Just an average middle class family. However, my dad's neurosurgeon told us his surgery and all the months of care he received afterward would have cost $180,000 (in 1994!), and our family would have been out on the street if it wasn't for our healthcare system. My dad also had a very minor heart attack in 2007 which didn't require surgery, and he didn't have to pay a dime or do anything else other than show his healthcare card for that either. Since those two events, my father has lived a healthy, normal life thanks to our public healthcare.\n\nIn Canada, EVERYONE receives that kind of care, regardless of if they are a billionaire or they are homeless. Because that's the moral and ethical thing to do, and is just one of the many reasons why I plan on staying here.

I would never want to be American and have often thanked God that i was born in Canada. I have a lot of health problems due to an elderly women almost killing me in a car accident amongst other condotions. If i was American my family would be bankrupt. A nurse came from america to work here in canada due to their healthcare care system. Her hospital wouldnt admit the man dieing of a heart attack or even do cpr until they got the insurance info. She quit that day and came to canada that was the 90's\nMy family are also loyalists

I think the mistake Americans make is believing THE WHOLE WORLD WANTS TO BE AMERICAN. I sure enjoy visiting there. Great folks, lots to see and do. \nWould I live there? No thank you.

Been in Canada for approximately 25 years. I can say that the effect that Canada has on a legal immigrant is neither here nor there. If you can make lemonade out of any lemon you’re dealt, you will thrive in Canada (and anywhere else where your efforts are not overwhelmingly quashed by corruption, blatant racism or other forms of segregation). \n \nLynn, I was a lecturer in Kenya, went back to school here in Canada after wallowing in culture shock the first year, then circled back to teaching in college again after an arduous journey in school, but this time in a different field. \n \nAfter becoming a single mother of four kids, I had to also hustle on the side to build a small business empire along my life’s ladder. Partnership with God, goal clarity, the get-up-and-go, and relentlessness truly work. It isn’t the size of the dog but the fight in the dog that does it, regardless of where you live. \n \nThe starting point for a new immigrant can be very low due to the weather, unpreparedness and culture shock, but if you know that the only way is up, and are self-motivated, those challenges are soon behind you as the tests become testimonies. \n \nBy comparison people have more human rights here regardless of their status. The wheels of justice grind slow but they do grind fine. Women and children have equal rights with men. Politicians are mostly there to serve not necessarily to exploit. \n \nOpportunities for self-development galore - including being trained to become employable and going to school at any age (sometimes for free while you are still at the bottom of the ladder). There are food banks so you never go hungry if it came to that. The disabled are better treated with dignity. \n \nThere are prolonged parental leaves for both moms and dads for up to 18 months. Commensurate with earnings, parents under certain thresholds are given Canada child tax benefits and other supplements for each child under 18 years of age. \n \nDepending on the number of kids and their ages, the money can add up handsomely. Not to mention that there’s no tuition to pay for primary and high school students. Tuition fees start at post-secondary level. \n \nTo see a doctor is free as it is paid for by taxes. It the meds that you and/or your insurance pays for. Some medical equipments may be paid for by either or both the individual/insurance and the government depending on eligibility. \n \nBy and large, there’s cleanliness of common spaces. There’s also safety and relative peace. At least wherever I have lived, I can’t tell you how many times I forgot to lock my door with impunity. \n \nThere’s a lot more stressful work here in my opinion, but like you said Lynn, systems work a lot more efficiently and effectively. \n \nThe elephant in the room is the extra hard work that those living abroad must put in to fulfil expectations back home. Also known as black tax, the overwhelming financial dependency of relatives on their diasporan loved ones places undue stress on many here, especially because there are no short cuts to getting money here. \n \nAnyway, Lynn, thanks for such a great topical issue you’ve shared. I have to stop here as I have written a lot. Hope this helps someone on this forum. \n \nAnd last but not least, you’ll be proud to hear that even though Canada has been good to me, my face may now be turning towards home to see how I can be of use to mama Africa. And Toronto has changed a lot \nA friend of mine sold his house last year and move to Calgary , then he used that money to buy a cheaper house in Calgary and all he owes on his new house is $100K. He loves it there. Thanks for the video I thought I was the only one. ❤

Thanks Lynn for bringing this up. I am a Kenyan living in Canada. You highlighted the most important thing- due diligence. There are a lot of people that come here with a promise of a better life and the notion is that it’s instant. I want to confirm to you that it’s better life, but it’s not instant. You have to put in the work and prove your worth. You have to gain Canadian experience to get a decent job. Also be ready to go back to school and upgrade your skills. There are jobs here zinaitwa Trades. These are the jobs that we don’t value at home but pay amazingly well here. Construction, Electricians, Plumbers, Mechanics, Carpentry, Welding, Hairdressers, Tailors.. Those are very valued skills here- if you can invest in learning these trades but pia ukikuja hapa you have to convert your certs to Canadian ones by doing an exam or going back to school . If you are into office jobs, make sure you have market relevant skills that align to this country. Be ready to embrace the digital revolution and mpende hesabu. Accounting is very much valued here. The secret is be ready to start from the bottom, be ready to upgrade yourself, be ready to work like you’ve never worked before… You will make it eventually .. Mungu mbele! \nI am confirming that we are going through a recession here and as per the market trends, it’s only going to get worser until we get to a point of stabilization. The housing market is crazy, food costs and gas (fuel)costs are off the roof .. it’s not easy. So if you have a good job in Kenya, hold onto it for now until things get better ( due diligence /research) .. Make sure you have the right visa that allows you to work here. That visitors visa theory is not working anymore. \nOverall Canada is a good country with lots of opportunities but it’s not for the faint hearted. \nLastly, be prepared for the harsh winters and days of severe loneliness- Si lakini ni life? I spent a lot of time in Toronto going to college then university and working in the summer. I love certain pockets of Toronto, the diversity, the opportunity and the uniqueness it holds however I would never move to Toronto. I do live in the GTA with my family and we were fortunate to buy a house pre housing market increase in prices and thank God we did! If I were a young person starting off now I would 100% relocate to a smaller city up north if I could get work there or to another province in need be. It is not worth all the stress and unhappiness that the trying to survive in the rat race that Toronto has become.

What you mentioned about in being in your 20s and trying to follow Bill Shatner down to Hollywood - very few actors strike the big time and that’s after a lot of work and if you’re ever on strike, your income wouldn’t last very long! Now you can be an independent content creator and reach more people than through the traditional path of moving to New York to get established in Broadway and then going to Los Angeles and hoping someone notices you and recruits you to a studio. About Toronto, it was once a gateway towards becoming Canadian. Not so much anymore. As a city it has all kinds of things to see, do, eat and be entertained yet its very expensive! Definitely not for the first time visitor and thanks for the overview of the financial and cultural capital of Canada!

I have been watching your videos and i get lots of insight about the immigration processes to Canada. Thank you. However there’s one thing i want you to address as well. That’s can someone submit two applications at the same time? For example, if one submit an application for Atlantic Immigration Program to get a job in the respective Atlantic provinces, then at the same time, submit another application for a student visa, are there any advantages or consequences? Assuming you first obtained the student admission confirmation, and decide to proceed with that, Will you be denied student visa bcos of your previous application for PR? I just need clarifications regarding this or similar scenarios. Because i learnt they retain information in their systems. Thank you

Thanks for pointing out how hard and time consuming it is for people to get citizenship in the UK. I’ve seen a lot of YouTubers making it sound easy and some have said it can take 5 years on the work visa which is wrong. The Uk work visa gives you 5 years then you have to apply for ILR and wait for another 1 year before you can apply for citizenship. Add all of that up and you’re clocking nearly 7 years. I know someone who got their Canadian passport in 4 years ?

Québécoise here. We Canadians seem to forget that there is as much racism in Canada as in the US. We just like to hide it behind a smile for some reason… I’ve lived in northern Michigan for 4years when I was in high school and college. I preferred the kids in the US over the kids in Switzerland by a lot! But I admit that shooting exercises in school were very weird. A lot of kids were dying in car crashes too… \nAlso, as someone with French as first language, that was pretty horrible catching up. I attended summer class with a bunch of kindergarten, and the teacher told in front of the whole class how me and my siblings were so bad at English even though we were teens. Well I’m sorry I can only write a college level paper in French but not in English yet! Thanks for belittling us in front of toddlers when we’re trying very hard to catch up before actual classes start! I was thrown into English Senior classes during second semester and did pretty well thank you very much! Went onto creative writing in college. Someone told me they though I was mentally retarded until I told them French was my first language…

I am from Quebec City and I love my country ! Honestly, the only place I could possibly consider to move (in the US) for my retirement is Honolulu. Hawaii was one of the best experience of my life and one of my favorite place in the world. Yes it's the US but it's also a country of it's own. The people there are the friendliest people I have ever met in all my travels. In short, Hawaii is the only state I would consider to move and it would surely be a place where I would have a foothold to live there for a few months a year during my retirement...
