I effectively spent a chunk of my childhood in America with relatives. I treasured these memories, but now all the feelings of wonder and happiness when thinking of my visits to America have faded. Now I just think of how selfish it was to sabotage Canada. American private equities want to rock our system and buy up all they can and so I am happy we are watching for this. Mr. Trump you seem to want to conquer and divide relationships at any cost, even with people who care about you. You sabotage yourself and those who are loyal to you. The US isn't launching a trade war against anyone. We are closing up shop and are getting ready to take care of our own. There is a massive difference. We cannot be expected to continue supporting other countries economies and defense obligations, when we have 2 generations of working class citizens unable to afford a home or have children. We have entire countries we could fill with the homeless and incarcerated, and veterans who see little to no positive treatment or respect within the job market. Things are already very very bad here in the states. I don't think many Americans realize how bad the economy is. Tariffs will force US companies to reduce the outsourcing of jobs, and force other countries who are over-reliant on trade from the States, to cultivate their own self-sufficiency. This may seem hypocritical when it comes to China, but that isn't a problem you can solve overnight. \n\nTo make it clear, Americans are going to suffer in the wake of this tariff decision, but that is the price we pay to force ourselves to change. We have made ourselves into a very weak country because of overreliance on other countries trade, and other countries overreliance on our intelligence, infrastructure, medical advancements, technological advancements, and defense capabilities. That is the Trade deficit the United States carried with Canada last year, almost a trillion dollars of lost production; lost profit and lost jobs and lost income for working class Americans. In addition to this Trade Deficit, U.S. exporters face possible 5 to 10 percent taxes in the form of sales taxes from some provinces and the federal government. Mr. Trump is trying to level the playing field which will even this deficit. This is fair for both parties. Tradeau knows this, but being a leftist and a globalist, he will say all manner of things against Trump.

Blaming the USA for what, exactly? It’s unfortunate that Canadian consumers are affected by trade restrictions, such as when Canada bans U.S. wines and liquors. Why ban it in the first place? Interestingly, even within Canada, Eastern provinces don’t have access to wines from British Columbia, what a shame. Shouldn’t we be working towards more open trade within our own country as well?

Remind me again why Trudeau was forced to resign? Even NY Times investigative journalists recently explained how NAFTA worked against US interests and killed so much of our industry decades ago; almost the opposite of what was intended. Trade needs to be reformed across the board. In a best case scenario, DJT will rescind the tariffs on Canadian goods. In the worst case, we get even poorer. If this happened after Trump became president the first time, the economy was strong from 4 years of Obama's presidency. Then COVID happened, and for alot of folks here, they haven't recovered financially. Savings and retirement plans are gone. Rent is higher, for many it takes over 50% of their income. So in this emergency time, there's nothing to fall back on. Oh and DOGE will cut SNAP benefits, I'm sure. That's food stamps, meant for the people struggling. It's becoming more and more of Americans. \nAm I depressed? No, I lived through Reagan's presidency. I'm cautious about life, my job, commuting to work, putting food on the table. I'm gonna try growing veggies. I already eat 75% of my meals at home or taken from home-cooked meals. I'm saving as best I can.

As a Canadian, even though I have disagreements with our Prime Minister, he is OUR Prime Minister, and I am glad he is so clearly and strongly saying to the US government and US citizens that we are done playing around. We will pull together, as a country, and come out of this stronger. We are willing to take on short-temp pain to work towards finding new markets and diversifying our trade relationships. The Canadian economy is in a stronger position to survive and recover from a trade war than the US. We don't get any benefits from the government (medical, or dental or anything) on top of that we still need to save money for an emergency. We pay out of pockets the 14,000 for our kids braces because we don't apply for any help. Tariffs have never worked, history has shown that all they do is raise the cost to the consumer and the profits to the corporations. We put tariffs on washing machines once and then the manufacturers her in the USA also raise the prices on dryers also even though there was no tariff on them. Corporate greed will use this to gouge us the consumers.
