As a Québec citizen, I just laughed so hard when I saw that someone actually wrote « tabarnak ». It would also be my own answer. Although I enjoy traveling to the USA and have seen amazing places and met great people, there is no way in hell I would move there. The main reason is the blind patriotism some people show that leads to fanatism and extremists opinions often generated by the right religious wing. Politics in the US is a freak show. Nothing less…

Also the lack of an independent body to oversee elections. That is sheer madness.\n#7. Denser populations, and, as a related issue, greater pollution.\n#8. The Presidential Pardon... which is a concept that seems designed to facilitate the abuse of power.\n#9. Fox News, and the rest of the deeply manipulative right wing media... which I should have put much higher on this list.\n#10. Military spending... which also should probably be higher on this list.\n#11. The myth of American exceptionalism.\n#12. American ignorance of the rest of the world, in general.\n#13. The Criminal Code including the Death Penalty, which was eliminated in Canada many years ago.\n#14. Education.\n#15. The drastically increased potential for political violence ever since Trump entered the political arena. This one also should be higher on the list. The United States could not even get through a transfer of power without violence. This is beyond pathetic. The peaceful transition of power is the #1 job of first-world democracies.\n#16. Attitudes toward social problems such as poverty and drug addiction. \n\nNotice that #4 - #7 could be subdivided into more than one reason.\nI thought this list was going to have 5 or 6 items on it.

The States is wonderful in many ways, but the your private health care system is dreadful. People die because their HMOs tell Americans what diagnostic tests they can or cannot afford. I read that one in four US families go bankrupt because of huge medical bills NOT covered by their insurance. Also the gun situation would give most Canadians pause. In Canada, only hunters, trappers, remote forest workers and cops carry guns. Last but not least: the right wing MAGA goons terrorizing people for flying Pride flags freak me out. Canada is a free country. We have bigots and thugs here too — but they don’t run the show the way they do in so many places in the States.

Healthcare, political craziness, hate, violence, gun violence, religious zealots, our education is way better in general, racism, the anti lgbt. Your nation is getting hijacked by by right wing religious extremists. Yes there’s good people and nice things but the only reason i would move is the weather since i hate winter. I grew on the border of Ontario and Northern New York State and have spent lots of time with people from the Southern United States and generally the people are very polite, on the surface. Unfortunately, as you get to know people you find out that many have some serious biased opinions on things that we in Canada have always been more accepting of. The last few years it’s been sad to see these views start spreading to our beautiful country. After Donald Trump and the rise of right wing conspirators the US is the last place I would want to live.

I did at some point but would not consider it now. Too violent, the cruelty of the Right Wing the utter stupidity of a country that voted in Trump. TRUMP! As President. They brag how they are a county of laws(like other countries don't have them) Yet can't get Trump into a courtroom to face a law he broke, just one of the many, many many laws he broke, pick one. Guantanamo Bay, the torture programme, the 20 years of endless destruction and death brought to Iraq and Afghanistan only to leave it worse off then when you started. The obnoxious chant of USA, USA at sporting events. I could go on, but I won't.

Why would anyone want to move into a country that is full of (Christian Right Wing Taliban Fundamentalists) backed by the (Federalist party). All those White Supremacy nut-jobs looking for any reason at all, to murder gay or democratic thinking people . . . No way America is not a good place until all the Nazis have been terminated some how. I was never interested in moving to the States but I think my reasons are different then most.\n\nStarting in my teens, I couldn’t understand why anyone would willingly live somewhere you couldn’t wander in the wilderness without worrying about things like poisonous snakes and poisonous bugs. I couldn’t understand what was so great about swimming in the sea if you have to worry about what part of the beach and how far out you go. How can swimming be fun? Lakes and rivers are much better. \n \nWhen I got older, I couldn’t understand how anyone could enjoy summer when the sun goes down so early in the evening. I left Vancouver, BC partially because the summer days are shorter then home and the winters are too dark. Even on an overcast night in winter up here, the light reflects off the snow and makes the night brighter. Do I like -30C or colder when it happens? No. I can’t walk the dogs because their feet might freeze but they’re idiots and will wrestle in the house if I don’t.\n\nNow that I’m almost 60, I note that all of my American cousins who had duel citizenship have moved back to Canada upon retirement where the conversation rate makes their pensions worth more and after 3 months they qualify for BC medical.\n\nThe guns, healthcare, right wing “Christians”, loss of human rights and potential for violence are why I don’t want my daughter to ever move there.

Your Insurance is a couple hundred a month? THAT is too much! No way would I move! And I've had operations and NOTHING costs anything when you go to the hospital no matter what you have or need!! Canadian's reaction to US right-wing politicians and Christian nationalists is not out of step with many Americans. However, it is an overwhelming majority here in Canada. For example a poll of Canadians in February 2022 found that 68% believed democracy would not survive another 4 year term of Donald Trump as President, and 47% were concerned about the US potentially becoming an authoritarian state.\nThat being said, President Biden had a warm welcome in Canada's Parliament, and is generally well regarded here.

According to Education Week, there have been 23 school shootings in the US this year, almost one per week. According to CNN, there have been more than 350 mass shooting so far (July 16, 2023). If I were of child bearing age, i would not consider moving to any state with severe reproductive health restrictions. \nI am more concerned about the growing militancy of the far right, along with the growing willingness of the right wing establishment to erode democratic processes and institutions in the US. Prior to the Trump presidency, I would have considered moving to the US for the better climate. Not now.\nAnd speaking of climate, I saw a report the other day that the waters around Florida had reached hot tub conditions.

Hey Tyler...ask the question in reverse...see how many Americans would move to Canada....and I have a question for you, Why should I have to make a choice where I live, directly in response to gun violence and mass shootings, lousy uber expensive health care , discrimination, racism, bigotry, and hatred?...like I said in my 1st post, I lived in Cali. and Arkansas in the mid 80's, as different as environments can be...yet all of the same issues, just some more pronounced than others ( surprisingly, I saw and HEARD a lot more racism in Southern California than I did in Arkansas)....but now, in the 21st Century, the fact that politicians are actively trying (and in a lot of cases succeeding) to return the U.S. to the 1900 ( taking the vote away from minorities, especially blacks and native Americans), making women bend the knee to what men say and want them to do ( the reversal of Roe v Wade, 100% total bans on reproductive rights, and the restrictive, totalitarian, Nazi/fascist bans on the rights to choose who you want to be, how you want to be addressed, LGBTQ people and lifestyles) when I see this, hear the right-wing racist, elitist,MAGA, B.S., I wonder how ANY people in their right minds could want to live in 2023 America, the Land of the Lost !

I remember WS having events right beside where the parliament is in the capital... they are tolerated because they are part of various prominent subcultures.

These people were told, that they were going to get it after the fire at the immigration center in Mexico, where 39 people lost their lives, only to be taken back and this why these happened. It feels like it was done in purpose to feed the right wing narrative that there is a crisis at the border, when the real crisis is the system's lack of personal to processs their Asylum forms.

Once again politics swung massively to the right with countries like Italy (once again), Hungary, Austria, Poland and Sweden, voting in right wing governments, France ending in a run off that narrowly defeated the far right, Belgium and Spain looking likely to be heading into heavily right wing governments at the next elections, whilst the US and UK governments both saw their politics swinging far further in that direction, especially the UK right now whilst led by an unelected leader who is demonising people in ways that would make Trump look soft. One of themajor rallying calls: immigration. The way media report on this becomes increasingly demeaning and hateful. During the 1930's much of the European media and even as far as the UK was ramping up the scorn against the ever increasing influx of Jewish immigrants coming from Germany. Even into 1944 there was a vast amount of demonisation of them seeking asylum, despite the knowledge by this point that there were horrific conditions in camps where extermination was becoming ever more apparent. The Nazi German government in 1936 passed laws that enabled them to revoke citizenship and stripped away laws on human rights. It would be great to say that these poor souls who were being demonised in their own country were accepted into nations who could see what was going on and who wanted to help, but that just wasn't the way it went. Media played out as it is now, leading to rejection and a greater number of deaths as a result of this. The way the UK government is currently working, it actually sounds like the maxi government of the mid 30's during the time of the Nürnberg laws. \n \nThe world feels far smaller now with double the amount of people and with things like social media playing a huge role in the lives of many. The ease of access to people around the world has made issues seem to stretch to far more countries now, whereas back then it was a time of empires. I get that there will be many here who support Trump, many who support Biden, there will be Brit's who support Sunak and the rather vicious words of Suella Braverman, whilst others will be more on the side of Starmer (I'm well aware of all the other parties but they don't stand to gain as much). There will be French people backing Macron, whilst others back Le Pen. We could go through each country all the way to the battle between Fujimori and Castillo in Perú, and the stories are much the same, but how will history judge us when people look back to this time? Will it be another occasion where we demonised those trying to escape the horror of the place they had the bad luck to be born in whilst we were luckier? \n\nI know there is hardship everywhere. I'm struggling more than most and I know I can't keep living this way. However, I don't want to be a part of history people look back at and say ‘if only they did something to help prevent this.’. I would rather be a part of history people look back upon and say; ‘that was a boring time period where nothing important happened’. It's already too late for that. Instead I try to remember that, though I was born into a family who never really wanted me, I was lucky enough to be born into a country that could support me during the hardest times. When you look at immigrants, remember that every one of us has immigrants in our family tree somewhere.

There's a huge bedbug infestation in many apartment buildings all over the city, 11 500 Swedish Kr for 18 square meters, and private landlords taking advantage of tenants both in prices and conditions. When a dark-haired tenant moves in, some one will eventually report that there are strange people walking in and out of a certain apartment, a blunt prejudice towards Arabic and African-looking individuals regardless of their nationality, meaning Swedes with different heritage. \nIt sounds like the whole world is on the same beat. \nSorry, but as a Canadian in Stockholm, I would rather suffer back home than in a swedish system where neighbours avoid meeting other neighbours and indifference is everywhere.

It's an exaggeration to say that Canadians are all collectivist. That's true for certain regions, say Quebec and the Maritime provinces, but less so for Ontario and the Western provinces. Even amongst the general population, it depends on one's ideological leaning, as in leftwing (socialist) vs more right-wing (capitalist). Canadians are diverse ideologically as well as racially/ethnically. I suspect ypur perceptions about Canada are somewhat influenced by the fact that you've spent most of your time in large urban centres like Toronto and Montreal, which tend to be quite leftist politically compared to more conservative regions like Southwestern Ontario and the West.

The growth of right wing all over the world is going to be disastrous for immigrants. I'm praying that a strong leader like modi or trump comes to power in Canada, Australia and UK to cancel all visa given to such immigrants and kick them back to India. It's gonna happen very very soon. Jai hind ❤️
