What has happened in Canada is actually quite simple. Companies sell products and services. Companies require employees in order to sell those products and services. The difference between what the companies can those products and services for and what they pay the employees is profit. The owners of the companies want to maximize this profit, therefore want to pay employees as little as possible. Scarcity is labour is one of the driving factors behind what employees are paid. One way to decrease scarcity of labour is to bring in massive amounts of immigrants. That is exactly what Canada has been doing for decades. The owners of the companies take profits and invest it in real estate. This makes real estate unaffordable for the employees whose wages have been suppressed. Lower wages also means less money from taxes available for services like health care. We allowed our politicians to be bribed into allowing massive levels of immigration. Stagnant wage growth resulted in lowered consumptive capacity in the economy. This lead to stagnant economic activity and lowered investment into things that would make the Canadian economy more productive. What we have now is unaffordable housing. Lack of jobs. A failing health care system. An educational system where the bar was lowered to accommodate the lowest common denominator. Increased crime and substance abuse resulting from the subsequent hopelessness. Several families living in a single house. People working several low paying jobs just to try to get by. People with full-time jobs that are forced to choose between being homeless or starving to death. The immigrants that are still coming here are sleeping on the sidewalk in front of homeless shelters, or maybe scraping by delivering UberEats.

I remember Canada from the 50s to now so far. The Trudeau government has destroyed Canada. I have lived long and can see what has happened through out the years.

As a US investor in Canadian companies from Florida, I like see whats happening up there. \nThe comments seem to reflect my own fb in the US....people complaining about high prices of housing and food. This seems to be an OECD post pandemic phenomenon. \nI will say, if you can invest in your monopolies and oligopolies, you will do well. Canada has some of the best, safest and conservatively run companies and banks. \n....and while you may complain about your health care, here in America, everyone lives in fear of getting sick and then being wiped out financially.

Might this be the case of reverse gentrification which happens in US, Europe and people are just not enjoying it. I see in Berlin the original berliners now have to move 2 hours away and higher income earners have taken all the central housing. As an Indigenous person (Anishinaabe), it's been a real mixed bag. It's been great that we generally have more visibility in media, and the federal government has listened to more of our requests than in years past, and healthcare costs and education gets covered quite a bit. That being said, a lot of Indigenous folks are poor and will very likely stay that way. If middle-class people are facing financial struggle, then it's even worse for us.\n\nIMO, as things get tight, what'll begin happening is what happens on reserves -- families will cram themselves into houses. Adult children living with their parents, young couples living with parents, and single adults having 2+ roommates well into their 30s, 2 people per bedroom.\n\nPlease though, advocate for more housing to your local government. Canada is awful. Since I moved here 1,5 years ago I’m just struggling with the depression all this time. There is no joy in this country, no feeling of safety. Crime is happening all the time. I don’t feel safe walking on the streets. My salary is low bcz no employer is willing to pay good money to an immigrant. I’m not able to afford a car but the public transport is just terrible! I can barely afford to split the rent with my partner. Barely can save any money. As an immigrant I will never be able to buy a property here. I lived and worked in another country and I was able to save so much money and have a great life, travel, buy food, have fun. Here I am not able to do this.

I spent several wonderful years in Vancouver in the 1980s. I would have said then that it was the best country in the world to emigrate to. I can't believe what's happened to it, mostly it seems under the present government.

I see a lot of people in the comments romanticizing the United States. We have about 250,000-300,000 homeless unvetted folks from all around the world sneaking through the U.S. southern border each month. Fact: a couple of hundred people on the terrorist watch list have been caught at the border (and reasonably for every one caught and apprehended, a few more haven't been caught and are setting up sleeper cells as we speak). All the while, we are facing a dire housing shortage, and an explosion of homelessness and lawlessness is hitting every major U.S. city. It's about to get very crowded and even more violent here. Come for the opportunities legally, but always watch your back and be prepared to defend yourself, your home, and your family. A peaceful, quiet cold life in Canada may not be that bad in comparison. It doesn't take long for a lawless country to fall from grace no matter how prosperous it seems. Look at what happened to Venezuela within a single decade.

There are essentially two major problems when discussing this issue. First and foremost, it is VERY difficult for anyone to even attempt to bring up an intelligent argument because they are instantly branded a racist, so many people just keep quiet, which is not healthy in a democracy. Secondly, when examining the world as it is today, the inescapable fact is that the nations with a high standard of living and a truly democratic system simply cannot sustain the rest of the globe!! It's simply a numbers game, if we gradually permit the rest of the world to bring it's problems here, the outcome is predictable. I'm sorry but I feel that it's a terrible thing when I go out and almost ALWAYS notice that I am a minority. I don't care what your politics are, that is just wrong. And the aspect of that is most unfair? The countries where these people came from would NEVER allow that to happen. In fact, most often we are not welcome in those countries at all!
