The US is very lenient towards immigration and has many processes in place to facilitate it. The USA are a secured country, anyone trying to flee it through that illegal passage should not be considered as refugees, but as immigrants who are trying to get in illegaly. Immigrated to Canada many years ago as skill worker in the engineering field, and there were no opportunities in that country, Canada just needed laborers to fill out factories and people to do the jobs that the Canadian born did not want to do. I ended up working in my field in the USA, and salaries and opportunities are much better in this country. Americans are very practical, they just want someone with the right knowledge. When applying for jobs in Canada, employers were very obsessed with Canadian education and experience, but in my opinion, that was an intentional way to block immigrants. In the USA I was never asked for American education or experience, the interviews were very straightforward, very technical, they just wanted to verify technical knowledge. In conclusion, if looking for professional opportunities, the USA is much better than Canada, but legal immigration as a professional to the USA is extremely difficult.

There is supposedly an agreement between Canada and the US called the Safe Third Country Agreement which means illegal immigrants are supposed to apply for asylum in the first country they come to. Unfortunately, because of Trump, the Canadian government doesn't trust any US government to give these asylum seekers a fair hearing. Second, this agreement only applies to official border crossings, not unofficial ones like Roxham Road. Trudeau is absolutely right in wanting to renegotiate the Safe Third Country Agreement.
