Born and raised in Toronto, and a university student. Definitely feeling the choke of the city, many of my friends are greatly considering moving to America or abroad after university. Hopefully the city can back on track, this city is awesome.

Now we're going to have a bunch of homless students, WE HAVE A HOUSING CRISIS! I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. I let a friend stay on my couch until he found a place. Although he had all the money needed, he could not find an apartment. It took almost 10 months to get my home back.. Any government party that would that would have a political goal of BUILDING APARTMENT COMPLEXES would win the election. Not a universal income!

I’m not sure what is meant by “making friends” exactly. In my opinion, finding people you can be open with and trust takes years, no matter where you live on this planet. So, for what it’s worth, I thought Calgarians to be easygoing, Montrealers to be outgoing but click-ish, and people in Ottawa kind of dull (at a social group level). I’ve only spent a couple of weeks in Vancouver as a traveler so I can’t really judge but my sister and a friend who both studied and worked in Vancouver - and who are both outgoing people- found it difficult to crack through social circles in Vancouver. They basically thought that Vancouverites are a little elitist/snobby.

Having had a friend that worked with Immigration, he told me that they have a department that literally just goes around hunting down people who entered Canada via student visas, but literally just disappear to work once they enter the country.\n\nCanada doesn't even have a hold on their refugee issues - how can Canada still accept more people?

Never compare a country with another. We are all educated immigrants who decided to immigrate over to Canada. Im from India, Canadians ive dealt with for my last 10 years are super friendly and sweet people. Yes as a Canadian now i love this soil, weather and i would not mind even giving my life for this country who has made my life better and given me all freedom to live my life the way i want.

I agree with what was stated in this.\n\nI would be interested in hearing how Canadian students compare to international students grade wise.\n\n There's a disturbing trend of expectations on Canadian standards being lowered and lowered, teachers being unable to fail students, and covid made it so much worse. Reading levels for middle school have been adjusted to be that of fifth grade or lower.\n\n There are so many students GRADUATING from high school who can't read at a sixth grade level. They haven't seen the inside of a classroom except to socialize with friends. \n\n Why would universities want these students? So their failure or drop out rate can go through the roof? So they can show employment after graduation being low as these students have little to no motivation to work?

Stop capping our resource sectors so much , start ramping up the procurement and processing of those resources . Our processes are way more eco friendly than the other main international providers . It would help drastically reduce emissions from non eco friendly sources while providing our economy with the huge boom it needs to upgrade our housing production and infrastructure. Look at the real stats on our worldwide emissions... Canadas emissions are a tiny blip of the worldwide emissions ... our government acts like we're this massive air pollutant scourge and we just aren't. Most of your points are close enough, I agree with your first figures about net tax’s and rent expending, I tracked my expending by different categories. Pretty sad how a bunch of Canadians have passed by drugs. I’ve been 5 years here, adjusting my life style coming from MX and uncertain to remain here. Canadian experience class is a fancy name, I noticed that some ppl lack of skills but with “high credentials” from school. Making friends is challenging, I agree with your assessment.

I have a friend living outside Hamilton, her husband died not being able to see the specialists he needed in a timely fashion. Her Daughter had a life threatening disease, she lived close enough to NY to take her daughter there for treatment that saved her life. She’ll tell you straight to your face that Thank God for US Doctors!!! Or her daughter would be dead as well.

Fabulous video! US viewer here. But we often vacationed in Quebec’s Laurentians and our daughter went to Ontario’s University of Toronto for her undergraduate degree about 15 years ago. UofT was rigorous, to say the least, but she did it in 4 years, unlike some of her peers. She LOVED it, and made many friends, including internationals. They’ve stayed close on FB, and even get together (some flying in from other countries, including the Middle East and Asia) every 2 years or so back in Toronto. We’ve found the easiest way to make friends is by going to university or college together and living in residence, rather than once we’ve enter the workforce.\n\nThat said, and as unpolite as it may be, the root of Canada’s problems are exactly its politics. IMO Canada’s misguided liberal policies are to blame for its stratospheric taxes, cost of housing, increasing crime, tolerant drug culture, and deteriorating health care system. That Canada now encourages voluntary euthanasia to reduce health care costs should say it all. Margaret Sanger would be proud. And it promises to get worse as long as Justin Trudeau and his ilk are in power. His lionizing climate change intervention at the expense of what really impacts Canadians is sheer madness. Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre and like-minded politicians could fix it all.\n\nHappily, here in the US, the conservative movement is growing and energized. Years ago I had a guy that I worked with that was Palestinian. He said he loved his home and missed it and his friends but he knows he is safer and better off here. He felt is was a fight his people cannot win. He also felt the other Arab countries were not helping them.

Like misery of the rich, be creative... give good examples, nowadays most people live alone or share with friends, same as for transportation, if you want to live like in the 60's and70's having each a car then you are right.. this model of the cost of living is high, but it's all over; We have to adapt to the situation, share more the resources

US family here. We were a big downhill skiing family, and often spent our winter vacations in the Laurentians. The exchange rate was great back in the 1990s and early 2000s. So when the time came to start looking at colleges, our daughter already associated Canada with fun, and fell in love with the University of Toronto. She was accepted. But before Canada would issue her a student visa, we had to provide evidence that we could pay full tuition, room, and board out of pocket. For all four years! They wanted an iron guarantee that she would never become a ‘ward of the state’ or consume public assistance services. We had to jump through soooo many logistical hoops for her to attend, it was exhausting to facilitate. But she graduated with honors in four years. All that time, the city was beautiful, clean, and vibrant, though not inexpensive. The St. George main campus, Queen’s Park, Bloor, Yongue Street, more. Everyone we met was friendly and respectful. We very rarely saw homeless and never tent communities. And crime seemed almost nonexistent except for bicycle thefts. Our daughter made many international friends and forged great relationships she carries to this day. So many wonderful memories. So it’s heartbreaking to hear how downhill the city has become. And the US is no different. It’s all in the politics, and neither Trudeau’s nor Biden’s policies are helping.

I lived here since 1961. The biggest negative changes have occurred over the last 25 years. Yes a million condos bringing tons of new city tax revenue (wasted) but so unreasonably expensive, as so many new immigrants naturally flock to Toronto and need housing. Which\nmeans traffic sucks, too many downtown roads closed, unused bike lanes steal car travel lanes. Toronto is generally dirtier and meaner than in 60s, 70s, 80s, even 90s. People are less friendly, less polite, less caring, and reside in self contained cultural enclaves. I used to ride the subway daily till 1990s, but i was shocked by my recent ride, with delays, so overcrowded slow service and bummy looking passengers now, scary. Quite a negative unwelcoming transformation!?

I lived in Toronto for almost 25 years but moved to Berlin, Germany, a few months ago. I found the last few years to be really sad and also scary. There is such a huge mental health crisis. The TTC is not very safe feeling. I have friends there who travel with dog or bear spray in their purses. The cost of rent is definitely a huge issue. A lot of friends can never move into a new place and I don't know anyone there who can afford to actually buy a home.\nThe positives are the food options (groceries and restaurants - some of the best in the world), the nice social life, so many things to see and do around the city, and the various beaches and islands.\nThe city is definitely looking uglier and uglier, though, with all of these boxy, glassy condo towers and now with Ford doing things like turning public space into a foreign-owned inaccessible spa.

You would be absolutely incapable of living in a country that actually enforces Islamic Sharia law. When the known Islamic movements did it you were scandalized and outraged and you kept claiming that they were not real Muslims when everything they did came from the Sunni sahih books and the Koran. Every place has its positives and negatives. Canada is beautiful, clean and green. The people are polite and friendly at a superficial level and the infrastructure is great. But for a new immigrant it's very difficult to make new social contacts or even to get a good job. The cost of living is high and housing costs are exhorbitant. The medical system is terrible with people having to wait weeks to meet a specialist \n\n Indian cities are mostly dirty, polluted and chaotic with poor infrastructure. There is rampant corruption and people can be rude and obnoxious especially while driving. But you can get help for everything and living costs are affordable. Plus the social contacts ..family and friends around are priceless. The medical system is way better provided you have some money.

I visited Toronto in 1986 and I've had friends from that city. The whole world is changing and facing the issues you mentioned in your video. I had lived in Seattle before its decline. I'm in Pittsburgh temporarily and I had lived recently in Erie, PA. They all seem to be facing the same situation--housing crisis, homelessness, and crime. And in Pittsburgh, limited social services.\n\nHowever, I'm sad to see a socialist country such as Canada suffer with these ills. If a socialist country can't take care of its people, there's little home for a capitalist country like the US.

People are not so friendly

See friends, all the middle class and low class people in the world are suffering from the same problems. First there are no jobs, even if there are jobs they are misbehaved, mistreated, abused or exploited etc. Then what can be the solution for this problems? This is our common problem wherever we are living in. Just comparatively, some places are better but we don't have easy access to that special place. I think we can't escape this. There are always Big Brother and Subaltern in the world. I think there is no democracy where the voice is heard and justice,security in general,job after education,implementation of law,equitable social life is guaranteed in practice. The powerful dominates everywhere in the Nature. This law is applicable forever because there can be no complete ideal world. But we can just minimize if we involve in politics everywhere.

Neither I hate any religion nor I love only one and most of my comments are generic and applies to any religion.

I lived in Western Europe, Japan and at the moment, Canada. I lucked out getting a well paying job in Vancouver when I moved back a few years ago and my average tax rate is actually the exact percentage you stated in the video - 28%, which includes income tax, pension and employment insurance. I'm actually doing better in terms of quality of life now but I do miss being able to travel around Europe for cheap. (e.g., quick train ride to Paris for the weekend) Now, I take cheap flights (e.g. Flair Airlines) to Mexico instead.\n\nJust to state some data points: when I was in Europe, I paid a total average of 39% income tax on a lower salary than I have right now in Canada. Things like utilities (e.g., gas/electricity), restaurants, certain grocery items and electronics (e.g., iphone/PS5/computers) were significantly more expensive because European VAT (inclusive) is usually 20%+. \n\nI don't have the exact numbers but on average I believe I was paying 70 - 90€ ($100 - 130 CAD) just for electricity each month for a small flat, but I am now paying $30 - 50 CAD for a decent sized 1 bedroom. I believe my housing gas bill was about the same or possibly a bit more. In addition, automobile gas prices were much higher (about $2€/L on average which is $2.90 CAD/L) and I think they could go even higher right now. \n\nHowever, rent is definitely more expensive in Vancouver, but I believe that is true for many West coast cities in North America. Right now I'm paying $2300 CAD a month for a 1BR, and I split that amount with my partner. In comparison, it would have been about €1300 ($1900 CAD) for something similar in the city where I was living previously. In a more expensive city (e.g. Amsterdam) a 1BR would easily cost €1800+ ($2650 CAD).\n\nFor me, the difficulty of making friends in my late 20's stays about the same. I think it is difficult to make new friends after graduating from school, and you have to put yourself out there by joining groups and events. (e.g. Meetup or volunteering?)

As a Jewish “cousin” living in the Southern US, I can definitely appreciate your concerns, especially those related-to the cold, inflation, religious observance, indoctrination, and an over-bearing government…. Assuming that they would be supportive and good role models, are your children’s grandparents still alive? Would living near them be an option? Are any uncles, aunts, and cousins available at any potential locations? Suggestion: Some dear friends sold their dream home and left their long-time friends last year to move across the country to live in a property that they had inherited. These friends eventually admitted that they were MISERABLE in their new location and now (12-14 months later) have returned to their “home state.” Unfortunately, their choices have turned-out to be very “costly” in many ways….. Since your children are involved, you may want to consider giving any potential location a 6-12 month “test run” before making an “official” decision….. Prayers and best wishes as you consider your options!! ❤️

I was born in Toronto and bought a house in Ajax in 2013 (before the housing market exploded). \n\nEverything you said in your video is correct. As a new comer, I know it’s hard to advance your career, make friends or buy property. \nMy son is 23 and will probably never be able to own a home and he wants to leave Canada for a better quality of life. \nRaising taxes, high rent, the failing healthcare system, and poor quality of life (plus the cold weather) are all factors that should make immigrants NOT want to come here. \n\nAs far as making friends, you hit the nail on the head. People in Canada are polite, but not friendly. I find it the same here in Toronto. You’re most likely to build friendships with people you work or go to school with. I feel we lack the sense of “community” and don’t put in as much effort to maintain friendships. \nI blame the weather for this.
