I have been living in Toronto for more than 2 year now and in addition to their contribution to India, I have huge respect for the Punjabi/ Sikh community in Canada. Despite whatever derogatory comments the locals might have, reality is they are honest and extremely hardworking people. The seva offered to everyone at various Gurudwaras is just so emotionally overwhelming. Unfortunately, there is one section- mostly the international students who have recently arrived seem to be influenced by Punjabi pop music and try to emulate which looks absolutely cringe and stupid. The situation now is their stupidity gets recorded and posted on social media which has resulted in local stereotyping the entire Punjabi/ Sikh population as destructive immigration.

I wanted to share some concerns about the current situation faced by international students in 2023. It appears that the financial burden on students has reached a point where it resembles modern slavery.\n\nStudents are required to pay a substantial $12,000 for the GIC upfront, followed by semester fees ranging from $9,000 to $10,000, with a total cost of $40,000 for their education. When you factor in taxes and rent, the financial pressure becomes even more overwhelming.\n\nWhat's even more troubling is that a significant portion of these students, up to 80 out of 100, are compelled to take on labor jobs to meet the requirements for Permanent Residency. This situation raises serious concerns about the quality of education and the well-being of these students.\n\nIt's crucial that we address these issues and work towards fairer immigration policies and more affordable education to ensure that international students are not subjected to such challenging conditions. Potential international students do need to do their homework. Consider not only the cost of the program or living, but if there is decent accommodations options.

As an international student, I am currently in Canada, and the grass is not always greener. The narrative spread out there is contrary to the reality when you get here. Sadly, I worked at an agency back home and I regret all the lies I told people, I was coached to do. Don't make the mistake of coming to Canada without the right papers, most people are scammed by agencies through this, and you will have a hard time. Trust me, you don't want to be homeless during winter, it is brutal. Don't come to Canada, if you don't have lots of money, the cost of living here is insanely expensive. If you have a good life in Kenya and earn over 70K, that will guarantee a better life back home than here.

Sadly, you have essentially described Vancouver as well. The elephant in the room is immigration. When you count refugees, immigrants, international students, etc. there are about 1 million people coming to the country annually! Even in the 1990s, CSIS even warned the government that high immigration would lead to a housing crisis. And that’s really sad as immigration has now tuned into a net negative for Canada. I personally think it is an invasion at this point. And things are far worse than the 1990s. Honestly, if I wasn’t settled in a place I bought near Vancouver 20 years ago, my family and I would have to seriously make other plans!

Guys you should note, the western powers are creating artificial problems such as immigration crisis ( canada, mexico-us border & libya-europe crossings) for them to do fundraising through international donors UN etc and their tax payers. People should realise most of this countries are on the brink of debt crises eg US is 34 trillion in debt. So this is a global fundraising scheme and africa as usual is the scape goat, just like the slave trade.

Here in US average house mortgage is sh210,000 a month. Average income sh400,000 a month. Then you have bills and taxes. My niece who just came from Kenya last year on work visa is making sh13 million a year as an RN. That’s sh 1.1 million a month. I think she’ll be just fine! My advice, get a bachelors degree in Kenya , apply for masters program over here, graduate and apply for a work permit. Or get a two year nursing program (can even do online internationally), work in Kenya for 2-3 years, then come here through work visa. Or apply for green card and come with a work permit. People who suffer the most are undergraduates and visitor visa holders with no work permit. They work for minimum wage under the table.

Some recruiters and post secondary schools are pure evil to do that to international students. Most of the victims are Indians. Most of the victims are not wealthy. My heart goes out to them.

While I identify and agree with the overall sentiment of this video, here is the problem Alina. As a somewhat successful tech person who came from nothing, I refuse to move out of a city to a culturally or globally lacking city due to “budget”. I tried spending time in BC and Nova Scotia in the capital cities. I could not spend more than a week in Saskatchewan. I can assure you that someone with decent skills and lifestyle would not be able to sustain their social and personal life, and mental health anywhere in Canada other than Toronto. If I spoke decent French, I’d say Montreal is a decent option. Vancouver is too lopsided as an international real estate haven, even though beautiful. So the problem is that Toronto is honestly the only city someone like me (and most my friends) would consider living in Canada, and we are all unfortunately being forced to move to the US. We are in our very early 30s so it’s still not too late to have a big move but none of us wanted to try out NYC or SFO much later than now. I hope things improve and we are able to move back to Toronto. But right now, unless you make $300k+, it’s impossible. And we are only able to make that money in the US (most of us). What if that my uncle that want the sponsored me does not have a international passport?

Disclosing i only watched 3 mins of this. The issue is if international students will competly flood the schools and domestic students wouldn't get the chance for the education. It's why you pay more. Canada is one of the most desired places to live. I suggest looking internally and trying to fix your own goverments and communities if you have such an issue with it.

i was born in Montreal and i moved here 8yrs ago. Everything people hear or say about Toronto is a lie. Toronto is going downhill fast and the powers that be dont seem to care. The TtC is in shambles and prices are sky high and no relief in sight as the blame is put on non sensical reasons. Blaming the poor and international students for Torontos problems is absurd but that is what we have. I know many who are playing the system to get what they need. As an international student who works at 3 jobs almost 7 days a week to pay my college and rent… I can only afford a small room with a sharing washroom with 4 others. Life here so difficult and it’s very exhausting. Canada should stop advertising itself as a country of opportunities and easier life. It’s much harder than back home if we talking honestly. \nDon’t get me wrong I love a lot of things about this beautiful country, but life is way too short to work at 3 jobs to pay rent and fees until I die. ?
