This situation is far worse for Canada than for the U.S. Trudeau knows this. History is being made. I would say this will be viewed either as one of the smartest political moves by a U.S president, or perhaps one of the dumbest. Time will tell. One thing I would say is never underestimate president Trump. Every time he has been undermined, underestimated, and disregarded he has came back on top. Welcome to 2025

I have lived in Canada for almost 50 years.. The United States of America has been our closest neighbour and friend ever since I came here.. \nLong before I came here Canada and the US were partners… \nWe relied on each other, we supported each other and we profited from each other..\nLet me make it perfectly clear I consider myself Canadian and I love the Americans like they were my own brothers and sisters.. \nAlso let it be known that our government does not speak for the citizens of this country… \nWe are being forced by the government to follow the rules. And now our government wants the American people to believe that all Canadians are against them. \nThat couldn’t be any further from the truth. \nI can’t say every single Canadian has respect for the Americans, but I myself respect America and honour Canada.. \nAs a true Canadian, we stand on guard for both countries.. God bless America…

Ya know, it’s honestly comical that some many people have these knee jerk responses to anything they deem “negative” STRICTLY for the fact that it came from Trump, and rather know TRULY ABSOLUTELY NOTHING behind the reason why these “negative” things are said or done in the first place… I ASSURE YOU 99% of the people complaining about this Canada tariff don’t know that it’s simply to (essentially) force Canada to agree to ramp up their border DEA enforcement/presence to help cut down on the illegal drug trade (primarily fentanyl) coming into America! If more of these people complaining knew this reasoning behind it, I think that would quite honestly shut a lot of them up! And to be completely honest with you, that failure falls on NO ONE MORE THAN THE JADED MEDIA!! I truly believe THAT is hands down the biggest failure in our nation currently!! The media is HANDS DOWN our biggest enemy so far this presidential term!

I am seriously considering moving to Canada where my ancestors came from. Fortunately for me it’s only a few miles away. I cannot handle the absolute criminality happening in this U.S. under the treasonous command of a felon and a traitor!

Remember that both Canada and Mexico came to America’s aid during the LA fires. ? \nThey have always been our allies and this is how we’re treating them. Shame on you, Donald!

Canada, the American people don't want this and a lot of Trump supporters didn't want this either. I'm sorry that y'all too have to suffer and deal with a man that doesn't lead your country. Believe me I would swap with y'all tomorrow. \n\nIt's amazing how Canada came up with how many billions for border patrol but we can't get Congress to pass a bill. President Biden tried to get a bill through Congress within his first 100 days and they wouldn't pass it then either. We have scanners sitting at the Mexican Border that will detect Fentanyl but Congress would approve using them either. Everyone needs to find out how their Representative voted on that bill and make sure they are not in office next time. \n\nI don't know how this man got elected but I feel like Musk and Starlink helped him win. I just heard that Starlink is what was used to send the results in the swing states. Musk told someone an hour before polls closed that Trump was the winner, with his evil laugh and let's not forget Trump telling his supporters that they didn't need to vote cause he will win without them. That's fishy. \n\n\nY'all what do we do if he won't leave office? What do we do then? I know he just got in the White House but it's never too early to have a plan to get him out. They worked on Project 2025 for 4 years and now it's all falling into place. OMG! What are we going to do?

Who opened the border to those who came to Canada in the name of student and ended up to the U.S.? Now you feel the pain of this kind of war but why you did help them arrest Huawei's princess? You should step down and give the next leader opportunity to handle this situation. Trump won't make deal with you.

As a Brit we often hear how the USA came to our aid when we stood alone against Hitler. True but Canada was there right by our side years before from almost day one. Great to see Canada still has some fight in them, huge respect from the UK.

Trump is going to go onstage tonight and lie about why the tariffs on Canada. We have done nothing to deserve this. One percent of fentanyl and one percent of illegal immigrants come from Canada into the USA. We give America a huge deal on oil. Trump lies about this to justify the tariffs. We did act on our border not just because trump demanded it but because it needed to be done. Still the tariffs came. He is a bully and a disgusting human being and I am sad that our friendship with the USA is over. He is putting Americas at risk and screwing his own farmers. We will not stand for this

Canada is insignificant on a geopolitical scale. Superpowers must maintain diplomatic ties that’s why we’re working with russia. Rather have Russia working with us than china. If our three branches came together to absorb Canada completely it WILL happen. Understand that NATO and every country inside it is under the US will. The US controls NATO

I'm british and was giving trump the benefit of the doubt but then he picked on Canada(we have the same head of state) and today his vice president started bitching about the british military, seems he forgot about the over 630 troops that came back in body bags after Britain stood right next to the usa after the new york attack. I'm feeling a bit low even though he's not targeting us. Allies should stick together

I know I will get attacked in the comments for this, but I grew up in the US watched many presidents come and go, and I have never seen the country that I live in turn so corrupt and evil in my life we have been lied to by our president. A man I did not vote for and it almost feels like it is turning into a fascist regime. I think it is time for me to leave and move to Canada because at least they know the difference between right and wrong. my family, a long time ago fled from fascist Germany and came to America because back then it was the land of the free it terrifies me to know that my family ran from that only to end up right back where it was before in the future my prayers go out to every American citizen and hope that you all rise up, right and left and independent and do what you can to get this dictator out of office. He’s only been in there not even two months and look how bad everything is already. United we stand divided, we fall.

You know I'm so sorry this idiot did this to you when I'm from the United States and I'm really sorry you're right the world's going to go crazy and it's going to be the United States it's going to pay for it and you know maybe one day we can all move to Canada where we can have a better life than to Trump's out of office if he doesn't become a dictator you never know what could happen in life he already is a dictator I finally got away from all that and we all came in the United States for peace not for what we're going through right now I'm sorry Canada sorry Mexico I'm sorry the rest of the world but I voted the right way and other people voted the wrong way and some people are understanding what they did and some people are still sticking by what they did so hopefully somewhere else could be some peace for some Americans in some way or another

The fentynal is probably going from the US to Canada not the other way. Rapist 34 felonies is a sick sick person. Most Americans know this. Sadly not enough Amercans came out to vote for Harris/ walz to avoid this.

Canada has to start accepting refugees from the US? \n\nI know we have to focus on all the immediate stuff, but even though we knew they had an endgame, we didn’t think they would speed run at this quickly. \n\nElon must have that extra special Adderall.\n\nI don’t want to live on this planet anymore! Apparently Mars is also too close. Bedroom suburb and all.\n\nI know it’s extremely stupid that he got reelected, but it’s not like he had a landslide margin when it came to votes. Unfortunately, none of us were allowed to kick the voting machines if we were voting democrat.

Canada’s Retaliation Against the Smoot-Hawley Tariff (1930)\nOne of the most immediate and severe retaliatory responses to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff came from Canada, which was heavily dependent on trade with the United States. Canada was the largest export market for U.S. goods at the time, and when the U.S. imposed high tariffs on Canadian imports, Canada responded with its own punitive tariffs on American products.\n\nBackground: U.S.-Canada Trade Before Smoot-Hawley\nIn 1929, about 75% of Canadian exports went to the U.S.\nCanada was also a major supplier of lumber, wheat, cattle, and minerals to American markets.\nThe two economies were deeply intertwined, and Canada had traditionally followed a low-tariff trade policy with the U.S.\nCanada’s Response: Retaliatory Tariffs (1930)\nPrime Minister R.B. Bennett responded to Smoot-Hawley by raising tariffs on American goods, specifically targeting products from the U.S. Midwest and industrial centers.\nCanada increased tariffs on over 16 U.S. goods, including:\nFarm machinery\nAutomobiles\nFruits and vegetables\nTextiles\nThese tariffs redirected Canadian trade away from the U.S. and toward Britain and other Commonwealth nations, under a new imperial preference system.\nEconomic Consequences\nFor the United States:\n❌ Sharp decline in U.S. exports to Canada\n\nU.S. exports to Canada dropped by 55% between 1929 and 1932.\nAmerican automobile and farm equipment industries suffered severe losses.\nMany Midwest farmers, who had relied on Canadian sales, went bankrupt.\n❌ Loss of a major trading partner\n\nCanada sought alternative suppliers in Britain, Australia, and other Commonwealth nations.\nThis permanently weakened U.S.-Canada economic ties, forcing the U.S. to reconsider its trade policies.\nFor Canada:\n✅ Diversification of Trade\n\nCanada strengthened trade ties with Britain and other Commonwealth countries.\nCanadian exports to Britain increased, helping Canada avoid complete economic collapse.\n❌ Short-term economic pain\n\nWhile Canada successfully retaliated, the tariffs raised prices for Canadian consumers.\nThe Canadian economy still suffered from the global depression, but it recovered faster than the U.S. by diversifying trade.\nLong-Term Impact\nPermanent Shift in Canadian Trade Policy\n\nCanada moved away from dependence on the U.S. and pursued closer economic ties with Britain.\nThis weakened U.S. economic influence in Canada for decades.\nRepeal of Smoot-Hawley and the Start of U.S. Trade Liberalization\n\nThe failure of Smoot-Hawley contributed to the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act (1934) under Franklin D. Roosevelt, which lowered tariffs and encouraged bilateral trade deals.\nU.S.-Canada trade eventually recovered, but the economic damage lasted for years.\nConclusion\nThe U.S. intended to protect its industries, but Smoot-Hawley backfired by provoking Canada’s retaliation. This case study highlights how tariffs can damage relationships with key trading partners, disrupt industries, and reduce exports, ultimately harming the economy.

OH CANADA! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of YOU and your Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Do NOT let Donald Trump ruin your way of life. It has been pristine for way too long. Hang in there, stay strong, we Americans are behind you. I am so ashamed of the people that put Agent Orange and his hillbilly in charge. We will fight, make no mistake, we will fight for the real America and for you too. I was born in Deep River, Ontario in 1954. My original family originates in Miramichi (formally New Castle), New Brunswick. I still own 45 hectares in Miramichi. I was brought here by my parents. They would be so ashamed. I think it is time I came back home. ♥️☘️

I probably have a bias because the Scottish part of my family came from the Isle of Mull to PEI. That said, \n\nI'm super happy that groups of us have places in Canada and we intend to spend as much time up in the Great White North as possible and spend all of our US dollars there.\n\nA Mari Usque Ad Mare

So, why is it that this guy makes it seem like they haven't been taken advantage of the U.S. since they have been able to! He is also lying about that northern border, too. Russians have been illegally crossing into the U.S. thru Canada for years. I know it as fact bcuz I've met Russian truckers who told me how they originally came to the U.S. via Canada! It's easier up there bcuz that border isn't as secure as the southern border. I guarantee you their statistics for fentynal crossing in via Canada is wrong. Those are just the statistics for the fentynal they caught, not the shit they haven't caught! Tariffs shouldn't have had to be the reason for Canada to do their job. They should have already been doing their job at that border. Trump had to threaten them in order for them to use drones, etc. at the border. They should have been doing that. This shows that they were already taking advantage of the weak ass government who just left office. Maybe he should just become the 51st state to make it all much simpler!

Canada and America should work together. Trudeau is the only one talking about a trade war. Think about that... Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on many countries who later came to the Whitehouse and invested billions to bring business here. Canada has enjoyed the American gravy train for long enough. Just look at the comparison between how much money goes into Canada and how much of that America actually sees a return on.

Interesting. So it sounds like Canada just started last year with stopping drugs from coming over the border...remind me, how long have drugs been coming across? Bluff called, Canada, you were abusing the United States, until Trump came around...shame on you, too late. And like he said, this will be tough. But drugs stay out, child trafficking stays out.

Canada in a nutshell: Trudeau dug our grave, lowered our coffin. Trump came and hammered the final nail.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
We asked for Canada to control the border, they did not. The tariff came after this request was denied. Canadians should be concerned about dangerous people coming through their country to get to the US. I hope your government shows more concern for your welfare as our president does for ours!???

The people who killed Eric, my loved one who was murdered in the World Trade center, came in through Canada; not that I'm upset blut it. I just wish they never could've lied their way through to kill someone they never knew, whio WASN'T greedy OR evil but died for it anyway while we watched it happen. Does anyone know what that feels like? I felt like I was standing in the 9th circle of Dante's hell.\nJust like I feel right now. Being punished for something I DIDN'T do again. Punish HIM. He's the one doing it.\nMary Trump has never called him smart. She's his niece.

Ridiculously proud Canadian here. As much as it genuinely upsets me that things had to come to this, it came as no shock. tRump has always been jealous of Canada - our oil, natural gas, timber, minerals, etc.. tRump is ridiculously jealous of our younger, fAAAr better looking country AND Prime Minister. \nSeriously though, Canadians ARE a proud bunch. We just don't feel the need to flaunt it. But this..... THIS one thing has sparked something SOOO fierce, SOOO visceral in my fellow Canucks that now that pride does not only burn in our hearts, but in our bellies..... on a guttural level.

Of course it's CNN. Trudeau, you do not represent Canadians. You have destroyed Canada and only now because of Trump you are dealing with the horrid fentanyl problem that is killing our communities. You have not fixed our health care system nor our political system. YOU NEED TO JUST GO, STOP YOUR EGO DRIVEN LAST GASP AT LEADERSHIP. You prorogued our own government, basically shut down debate and decision making in Canada while you parade yourself around the global world. NOW YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT CANADA FIRST, when a short two months ago you were pushing Canada for the past 9 years as a post national state. You are posturing and have no credibility in Canada or globally. YOU DID NOT WORK WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU CAME UP WITH NO PLAN BASED ON WHAT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE U.S. YOU JUST WANT TO PREEN AND SPEAK DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA AND SKIRT AROUND RESPECTFUL NEGOTIATIONS WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP BECAUSE YOU ARE MANIPULATING TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. Just take that walk Trudeau and be gone, you have 3 more days and then we do not want to see you again.

I live in Washington state. Spokane just raided 5 businesses that were engaging in prostitution and the employees are sex trafficking victims from China. Guess which border they came into this country from... CANADA, but the Trudeau says they don't have a problem at the border
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
The asterisk beside all those talking points is that those stats came AFTER the announcement of the tariffs...Trudeau has systematically crippled Canada. The US has all the resources that Canada does, but why harm your lands when you can buy from someone else?...the US is a consumer, but with the ability to self sustain. Mexico and Canada are mad their best customer is tightening their wallet. It's all postering.

Do you people even have a clue on how to negotiate or do you accept the first offer that you receive at a car dealership? Stop judging Trump because you're using Biden, Obama, and Clinton as barometers and America was taken advantage of during those administrations. As far as tariffs are concerned, Canada and Mexico have committed troops at their border since Trump initiated tariffs. Canada and Mexico are cutting down the flow of fentanyl into our country since Trump initiated tariffs. Trudeau is talking tough because he came off as weak the last time Trump scolded him. Trudeau is scheduled to meet with Trump in a few days. Why is that? Canada will meet Trump's demands on fentanyl and tariffs; and America will profit in the short and long term. Stop believing the fake news who does nothing but create fake chaos no matter what Trump does. These tariffs do not affect our country in any way over the short term. The only reason that the markets are tumbling is because the fake news wants to create panic when there is none. Same thing with Zelensky. You idiots are rooting for a war to continue because Trump is mean. Zelensky is ready to work for peace because the mean guy yelled at him. Wake up idiots! We need strong leaders not people like Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, and Sanders who only care about their own interests. You'll find out soon enough who's making money off the Ukraine War.

I'm an American and I don't want this, I didn't vote for this, I'm upset by this, and I'm by no means the only American that thinks trade war with Canada is stupid, half the countries number one imports came from Canada, tariffs on a trade partner and Ally is absurd!

Looking at these comments about trump is mind blowing. Canada and all the other countries are not going to pay for our national debt!!! It’s freaking stupid to say you stand with Canada and you didn’t vote for this. . . Canada is barely hanging on too. It’s America that has been carrying all these countries for far too long and what are they giving back???!! You people need to fully understand the reality of the situation before commenting your nonsense. If anything, leave our country!! You people came here and took it from us!! Remember that!

Canadian here too. Thank most of you americans for this outpouring of support, and seems many from both sides of the aisle. \n\nFor my part? I do believe you have a russian asset as president now. Even the freaking Russians just came out and said US policy is now aligning with Russias own. Hes abandoning an ally in Ukraine unless Ukraine gives an unconditional surrender to a guy who says he is not interested in any deals, and broke his OWN TRADE AGREEMENT stopping just short of actual war with Canada and Mexico. Our own PM as you hear, says Trumps goal is to destroy our economy and annex this country. \n\nYou have a russian asset in the seat folks. \n\nDo something about it.

Why didn't Canada started the border security long before trump came to the office if that many fentynal came through for years.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
Even before now less than 1% of fentanyl came across the Canadian border. Canada has had a trade imbalance with us in our favor. Canada last year had already agreed to beef up border security by $1.3 billion. Canadian troops have fought alongside US troops in several wars. As recently as a few weeks ago Canadian firefighters were helping put out fires in the US. Dumbest tariffs doesn't begin to describe it.
