As a Canadian who has lived my whole life here, in my opinion there were two major factors that need to be highlighted that started this mess: fiscal policy and focus on fringe politics. First, Canada came out of the 2008 meltdown relatively unscathed due to following a markedly different strategic path than other major countries, namely tight banking regulations as well as 15 years of paying down the national debt. However, several years after 2008, sentiment shifted to adopting the same MMT-led fiscal policies as other nations: lower interest rates and deficit spending. Secondly, at least 10 years ago, there was a major political shift to start emphasizing fringe social issues (climate, race-based, gender, etc.) instead of standard issues such as the economy or military to name two, and it was strongly evident in academia and in the media. The result was little governmental, public or media attention being paid to core economic concerns such as the massive growing government and consumer debt levels, highly inflationary housing market, or decreasing productivity. When COVID hit, the government further doubled the existing federal debt and when they found that unsustainable, opened the doors to massive immigration levels to bring the Debt-per-Capita ratio down which while helping in that one metric, has further inflated the housing market all while forcing wages down. We now have unsustainable public debt levels, unaffordable housing, decreasing wages, decreasing productivity, and a troubling reactionary political swing towards extremist right-wing ideologies. Top that off with the US administration seeing Canada is on an economic precipice and threatening to take the country over, there couldn't be a more perfect storm.

If GDP takes government spending into account, which it does, then American numbers will look higher (look at their debt compared to Canada)

Let's not forget that the US simply has more capital to put into its industries. A LOT more.\nI could also say they can spend an infinite amount of money on anything - as they can print USD and the whole world pays the price - a loophole Canada just doesn't have.

Canada needs to stop living beyond its means. Get rid of un-necessary ministries, involvements in private sector that isn't mandated. A Canadian DOGE would be good too, to look line by line to get rid of waste, abuse, corruption. Most illegal migrants spend thousands of dollars to commit the crime (entering any sovereign country illegally is simply an invasion). If they dare to enter China or any of the Arab countries this way, then who knows, they would be in heaven or hell rather than back home. All the deportees should be arrested on reaching back home for invading a foreign sovereign country and tarnishing the images of hundreds of millions of citizens of their countries who enter the USA or any other developed democratic country to study at the best of the universities, and after completion of the courses, they are not only provided the best of the jobs but also citizenship or other legal status to stay put in the countries. But these people reach their desired destination after going through rigorous educational and other processes and after a thorough background check. But in the matter of illegal immigrants, how are the victimized countries supposed to know their backgrounds? How can one be sure if they are not hardcore criminals, terrorists, spies, or even trained soldiers of enemy countries? In such uncertainty, how can the invaded countries be sure that an incident or incidents of such a large magnitude might not take place that, in comparison, the incident of 9/11 would look like the small incident of bursting firecrackers?But on one election promise, the president is, unfortunately, taking a complete U-turn that those students who do the master's and other higher studies should be retained and provided legal status to stay in the country as their contributions are needed to give the country the perpetual cutting edge in the highly competitive world and keep the country's status as number one. These scholars are feeling cheated that by spending huge amounts of money and contributing to the research and development during the studies, they have not only been taken for a ride but also become the main target of the deportation campaign as their status is available with the government. On the other hand, millions of undocumented workers are comparatively safe, as tracing and deporting them is not an easily achievable task. Besides, millions of foreign citizens are given entry into the country on flimsy grounds, and many of them do not even ever go to elementary school. I think even God would not be able to make out what the fuck this country has become on this issue. Almost the same is the situation with most of the EU countries, the UK, Australia, and Canada.

Why spend all that tax money on northern boarder enforcement - how about Canada - reform your immigration policy and stop em at the airport. Cost a lot less to stop them at the airports if they don't have a good reason then tracking em down with Blackhawks and depleting our resources. Hope you get a better leader soon! I don't believe in poaching young talent from other countries. Countries should spend more on giving all it's young a chance to get a education in their own country not just the rich or government workers.Yes I would like to see a youth work exchange program so we get use to each other and trade fairly. Wouldn't the fact that the city council, allocated that money AFTER the ice raids took place. It’s not as difficult to expel illegal immigrants as the government portrays it. With today’s technology couple IT guys could handle it. There’s no need to spend millions on the army or fences. There’s no shame in adopting someone else’s productive experience. Just look and learn how it’s done in Saudi Arabia or the Emirates. Lock bank accounts a month before visa expiration until visa renewal, international money transfer upon presentation of valid visa, entry to theme parks - movie theaters - schools- colleges only with US driving license or valid visa, etc

These hotel owners who have been getting rich off housing migrants in they're places..... how much are they gonna end up spending repairing the rooms that migrants trashed? These students can't complain about the student fee, Housing , food and living cost .\n\nU can blame trudue for lowering the standards for student visa. \n\nTo my knowledge from friends i know as students durring high-school vs students coming to study at college. \n\nPrior to this issue these a few mandatory requirements \n\n- parents most make over 200 k usd , and assets .\n\n- you must have xxx amount in usd dollars equivalent in your bank account and open a HSBC bank account with xxx amount \n\n - u must show you can afford for your child to stay at a mandatory homestay , all the associated cost staying and studying in canada for min 3 years \n\nJust passing the first 3 requirements, most ppl get rejected. \n\n- most leave the home stay due to culture differences and end up renting a 1 bed room condo. \nThat alone back in harper days was 20 k a year.\n\nMind you these students i met are from Vietnam, a 3rd world country where a university graduate with 2 degree will make only $500 usd which is consider a very good job . Its equivalent to5 k / month . \n\nSo thier dollar isn't worth much , for their parents to have that much money to send a 15 year old to study hs in a foreign country is a luxury only a selected few can dream of\n\nAlso none of them worked and work permit wasn't allowed. The reason for denying room to students is because they mess the place. Dont know how to maintain the place they live\n Not all are like tat but majority comes in. And i myself faced it. I gv my place to live to almost 5 different Indian students ar different times.. all messed the room also left me repairs which i had to spent. I had sympathy wen students come for accomodation so i gave a helping hand instead i ended up spending 1000s
