I currently pay $734.96 per month for my bachelor apartment in Parkdale, Toronto. All inclusive. I found the place in 2015, and it started at $660.00 per month. But with Toronto, the transit system is far behind the progress of cities like New York. Toronto should have multiple subway lines going east and west. Queen St. and Dundas lines for sure. The overall culture of the city is not as vibrant as it was during the 2010s. That could be Covid related. Or things are taking awhile to come back to pre-Covid form. But a lot of great venues and restaurants have been shutting down. And being replaced with the construction of condos. The real estate is insane here. It feels like things have gone downhill since the Raptors won the NBA championship in 2019. Because that really united everyone when there were a million people gathered for the parade. I'm hoping things turn around and there's more affordable housing for newcomers. I know I'm staying here for a while longer. Because of my cheap rent. And career attachments to the city. I saw your video and remembered when I came to the USA as a refugee in 2003. It was a tough ride. I had to take three buses to go to work. I also shared an apartment with a young girl from Kenya. It will get better. Hang in there and keep your eyes on Jesus. Today, I am a United States Citizen, I have two bachelors degrees ( Nursing/Psychology). I am now in school for my Masters in Nursing while establishing my own business. I own my home and no longer have to take the bus- I own two cars. They have no jobs and the Jobs they give to Black Immigrants in particular, whether you have a degree or not, are generally seasonal summer jobs in warehouses, working with plastic injection molding machines. I am so happy to be able to live, in my language and in my culture, in the magnificent city of Quebec. I'm not rich, but I have a magnificent three-story residence there in a beautiful neighborhood where vegetation abounds, where crime is almost non-existent, and above all where my daughter also lives with my grandson!\nIt would never occur to me to move to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver or any other large Canadian city. On the other hand, I could do it in almost any human-scale city in Canada, the United States or Europe. Everyone to his own tastes !

Part of the problem that no body mentions is how some tenants exploit the system making mom and pop landlords reluctant to rent out. Landlords with deep pockets jack up rent prices to account for these “shady tenants”. It is a small percentage but it takes away valuable housing units the city desperately needs.

The rental issue because ON Premier Doug Ford removed the rent control limits back in 2018, since he has done this, any new housing, rental units, renovations that occure after 2018 the property manager can settheir price and / or is when thos renovictions started (after unit renovated and since after 2018 the landlord increases the tenant's initial rent more than what the city would set as their limit usually betwen 1 to 3 percent, But this drastically changed during and now after the pandemic years.

Houses cannot be built overnigth, this problem will last for many decades as politicians are part of the problem, they create the regulations, they set the high taxes and they own the rental units. They want you poor and dependant.\nBetter run while you still can.

I MISS living in Toronto so much but theres zero chance I could afford it now I had a 2 bdrm in Parkdale for $1475 and the DAY I moved out they marked it as being under renovation and bumped the rent for my unit up to $3200.

The United States government needs to take care of the American people. I don't understand why we don't protect our borders more. It's okay to accept people into our country we have always done that but when people get together and storm the borders and we get criminals we get everything else included because you always get the good and the bad. The problem with Canada’s economy is housing. Doug Ford scrapped rent controls for anything build after Nov 2018. His developer buddies can raise rents to whatever they want. In Niagara… a modest 2 bedroom unit just got hit with a rent $9500 as an f/u to the tenants. These crazy rents become the “fair market price”… and realtors use these crazy numbers to justify outrageous home prices…. For the commission.\n\nIt’s a Conservative issue… not a Trudeau issue. Housing is provincial. \n\nBtw… higher house costs means higher commercial costs. Store fronts. Manufacturing. Warehousing. Transport. All have land costs.
