Last summer I was followed around a PetSmart by staff for the entire 10 minutes I was in there before I was so uncomfortable that I left. I work in retail. I know what they were doing. I'm a white woman. I can't imagine what it must be like to have this happen almost regularly. At my store, I try my best to treat everyone the same, regardless of what they look like. Unless you are rude to me. Then I'll give it right back to you.

there is racism and prejudice everywhere. on every level no matter gender, race, religion, culture. etc. no matter where you go. but if these guys take a trip to any of those corrupted third world backwards countries they would see how good they really have it. us foolish americans canadians dont know how good we have it. we are living in the freest country nation and society ever seen in the history of the world. at least our country creates new laws every year to make our people feel safe. but other islamic countries continue following laws made in the 15th century. do you see and appreciate the difference.\n\nsure people will label you based off your skin tone and your demeanor. BUT WHY? because they have had bad history with those that look just like you. i have had REALLY REALLY bad experiences with asians in everything. so i naturally stay away from all asians and i do not trust them. HOWEVER, i feel when foreigners come to this country they ruin it for the rest of the citizens that are of similar foriegn race eventhough they were born there. WE NEED TO PUT OUR NATIONS CULTURES first. and thats what we have to teach everyone. we put our canada america pride priority and whatever culture we came from LAST. THATS WHY its best we learn to fix our people in a whole in our country before bringing in anymore foreigners who do not respect our nation. lets stop third world immigration and work on making our country great again. so we can stop all this crime in our neighborhoods. because it hinders our progress. once every race color ethnicity of people are acting right then we will have no prejudice based off color or even gender because everyone is giving everyone respect. but because CRIME IS HIGH in all foreign races, and we continue to disrespect eachother. nobody feels safe anymore. whether your light skinned white or black.

Having worked for Best buy in my experience my bosses made us be that annoying and ask and talk to each customer more than once depending on time in the store if u didn't they cut ur hours the following week and I hated it personally when someone says no need no help I feel like awesome I can go bk to waiting for this shift to end cause I hate my job!

I'll lay it out for you: Me: typical middle of the road liberal oriented Canadian. Non white, immigrant (I wasnt born here) I worked in a Refugee housing for over 4 years in Ontario. Most were not war areas refugees (Yes I know there are other types of refugees). I only encountered few refugees from war areas. ONLY 1 person from Iraq, about 2 families were from Afghanistan, 1 couple from Pakistan(I doubt they were real refugees they spoke fluent English, maybe political refugee), and a most from African countries. Its too far for real refugees to get here. Its Easier for them to go to other countries nearby or Europe. MOST SEEM TO BE ECONOMIC REFUGEES. Most were coming from Africa. Some are coming from Latin America, which shouldn't be happening. Once they showed up at our doorstep and we processed them into the system, they were immediately in the same class as a Canadian resident homeless person if they were making a refugee claim. We get money to house and feed them (from the government), and they are given a stipend for basics from the government processed through the Social Assistance/ Welfare system (they get less than a resident/citizen I think.). They then have to get their case processed by the refugee board, and most seem to get in. I've only heard of few getting sent back. One person I know at our facility, was given a subsided social housing apartment after a year in our facility. So they went straight from a shelter to a government/city owned subsidized apartment. (Didn't seem like it was a issue for the housing worker...they didn't report it (if they were not the ones that helped the person to get it), they were white, the housed person was Latin. This refugee claimant, and then month or two new Canadian resident person was given an apartment in a prime area of the city, instead of the 1000's of Canadians, those who came before them, and born Canadian citizens on an extremely long waiting list. How this was allowed to happen I don't know. The person was probably sucking on someone's straw. I'm just trying to think the barriers these people have to go through to get a job here. We are far removed from the time of the 80's and 90's., and housing and jobs are so hard to get. Lol the "Canadian government asks them to repay the traveling cost to Canada if they are sent back"....I wonder how much the government recoups?.....more like 0 probably. What a bunch of crap. How do you demand someone to repay their flight cost when they get back to their country?

This whole thing is total horseshit. Implicit bias is far from scientific fact. It’s barely a working theory. I like how only the white people are pegged as preferring a certain race. Guess what, EVERYONE prefers a certain racial group. And 9 times out of 10 its the racial group you are part of that you prefer. This is straight up propaganda.

There is a lot of BS in this video. Stores like Best Buy will always have employees come up to you and ask if you need help ESPECIALLY if you linger. Then there are some facts. My brother worked at a Sprint Retail store and tells me that 100% of the people caught stealing were blacks. So the black community can thank other blacks for the discrimination. \n\nAlso, if you are dressed a certain way, don’t complain if you are followed. \n\nIs there racism? Hell, yes! I’ve been victim of that myself. But some of the things shown here was just stretching.

People who work at markest sometime want to be police officers lol. I get treated like this all the time and I'm white, but they assume teens go in to boost things.

I agree with a lot of the things said in the comments. He didn't properly look into what is required for refugee status and came illegally so shouldn't receive preferential treatment. However, his not speaking English...where could he go to learn as an illegal immigrant? And likely he had to work long hours to save money for lawyers, etc. The language thing to me seems a bit harsh. He may even know passable English, but the reporters may have wanted the interviews to go more smoothly and so spoke in his native language.

Lost her job? Over a viral video? Now THAT's the real scandal here. Firstly she's not working while getting into the argument. People have a right to a private life. Second the guy filming is part of the argument and we have no idea how it all started. Either way she's not a celebrity and no role model for other people, she certainly has the right to get drunk and get into arguments like everybody else without having her workplace spying on her and being judgemental.

Hope Canada lets him in legally,he,s not like the refugees coming to Europe,not willing to work just hold their hand up for money !

glad this episode was made... so that those who think they can just come to canada like some sort of dreamland safe haven would think twice. Canada is nice, but not dumb... tax payers work hard and pay a ton of taxes for the social programs and assistance... why should people just sneak in and enjoy all the free benefits? Just my personal opinion. Life is hard in canada.

Shopper Drug mart in TD Square-Downtown Calgary. I get racially profiled there all the time. It was busy one night while I was trying to buy something and I saw two people steal items right under the nose of the cashier. Since I get racially profiled there all the time I just watched the whole thing play out and laughed. Now I just bug the heck of the people following me: I ask them to look for stuff for me all the time. I don’t like the attention but I’ll make them work. And the people who do the racial profile are often people of colour, smdh! And the owners of most of these shoppers drug mart in Calgary are Chinese.

Why would Canada have to accept all those illegal immigrants,because they can't get work in their country,then they illegally cross our border and,,hey they don't want me in USA then Canada you give me work,,go you asshol true proper Chanel like every legal immigrants and only then you can ask for work and be accepted in this beautiful country,period!

A lot of people actually spend a lot of money, get higher education, get English language accreditation and rack up work experience just to get to Canada LEGALLY as an immigrant, where they have to start from the bottom again. People like Jose expect to just breeze by and benefit from Canada's resources with schemes and false claims of asylum seeking. He should be deported. He hasn't even made the effort to speak English and acclimate.

part two so now i have my first black friends and they call me bum blaster and blood clout with that thick accent and laugh and never explain . well time goes by and nigei invites me to his house to hang . so im getting a little drunk and tell a story about going to my first black bar --------------- you said what , all conversation stops . i say i went to a black bar and my buddys girlfriend starts at me about it not being a black bar but a ---- i cant understand her the accent again. so i start my story again , iwas the only white person in the bar and kind of stood out , felt like everone was staring at me . i asked if this is how blacks feel. well everone start freaking and my buddy who i work shoulder to shoulder with every day and eat three meals a day with and ride the bus home with. his girlfriend starts yelling im racist and to get out of her house. is my buddy walks me to the elevator i say to him you know im not racist and he answers i know but what can i do. i get it its always ok to be racist as long as your not white . we worked together as a team salt and pepper as he use to call us for an other year and he came to my house .

its funny the cbc disables the comments section on all their videos that white conservatives are likely to respond negatively to. but when its the reverse , boom. ill tell you a little story about racism . 35 yrs. ago i worked demolition and one day i notice these new guys just standing around. a couple of other guys come over to me and point out that those three guys just standing around would be fired at the end of the day, when i asked why they told me it was because they werent doing any work becuase no one would show then what to do becuase they were black they used different words. so i went over to these three guys and told them if they didnt work they would be fired at the end of the day. they said no one would show them which i thought was pretty lame since the job was to pick up the demolition garbage and pill it like every one else, so i showd them and save their jobs.

Laws are laws you seek asylum in the first safe landing not your choice of wherever whenever. Why then can I not leave Canada and go live in another country undocumented then when I fear deportation just go to another country? Because it's illegal yeah. Ugh we are not here to be used and walk all over like a doormat especially if you are not working and paying taxes but taking everything you can get. I would like you to do a test in Brampton in Ontario Canada where East Indians pretty much rule the scene , send in White People for a job at a work place that is owned and operated by Easts Indians and see if they hire the White person or hire the East Indian person . I feel sorry for this man and his family! But I wonder how sorry he feels, knowing that by coming to Canada, he and his fellow immigrant countrymen have, taken jobs away from Canadians? 1500 people like myself that have worked here all their lives? I was working in the meat industry for over fifteen years, just to have my employer, take my skilled job and give it too an unskilled worker, under the temporary foreign worker program. That program was set up by the federal government for unskilled workers, coming to Canada for unskilled jobs that Canadians didn't want. My job was a skilled job, that I had to work my way up from the bottom, to the level of employment, that only skilled workers were capable of doing. This temp program was for unskilled employment only! But if your employer is big enough in the industry, the government allows them to bend the laws of the land, and give your jobs to any undereducated immigrant that comes along...WTF? Canada wake up!!!

I often make the simple response to the obsession with race and color, skin color is an illusion as well as even nationality and race .people who have scientific mind created all these names as well as for animals. Then I will be free to call my Of the human race,forget treating others as white,yellow,black,red,brown etc. Then I will invent my own scientific naming to a new name for all pet mammals A cuchy or mammalius d la plupus d cuchus or. fuzzy hairy small pet mammal. The human race hasn't met the expected perfected plane of spiritual and intellectual awareness to Stewart our planet mother earth. But the question I ask, If the space disks win,and the extraterrestrials rule, what will life be like under alien rule, education,economic policy, work, labor , industry, food , commerce, social life etc? will it be better or worse.Does racism among humans have to lead us to such a possibility to be invaded by another unknown race from space. Rather we must see the good,constructive, creative,beneficial and artistic musical in all races. The the light skinned races tend to be planners builders,architects and social engineers,they can teach others the skills for a better world lukecthe darker races can teach other races how to tune in to nature,medium pace if life,balance spirituality, balanced emotions and as they integrate planning psychology and scientific engineering to their creative capacity to help Asians, The Indian and the those of other races in the Pacific to help renew,create a more better balanced educated world. To answer your WHY THE PENALTY TAX, it has only been that way the last few years, the idea if UNIVERSAL HEATH poisoned the USA. Canadians and Europeans kept insisting the USA needed GOV MANDATORY HEALTH, and some morons in the USA listened to you and now we have the penalty tax. I can't believe what's being said in these comments. So the fact that he didn't speak English in the interview is the only thing that sunk in? Ok. Many of the immigrants that come here , come for the opportunities: Work, food, shelter, etc. Learning English should be mandatory in all immigrants applying for citizenship but we can't disregard someone because they choose NOT to speak English. For all we know, this guy (I'm sure) understands and probably can speak some English but for the sake of the interview the producers mostly likely asked him and he chose to speak in Spanish.

It's a heartbreaking situation, but a country has the right to decide who comes in and who doesn't. The places where hard-working, industrious people like Jose come from need to drastically change their societies to capitalize on his talents and provide for a stable future for his children. Perhaps what the US and Canada can do is help train those country's leaders to implement policies that improve their economies like establishing strong property rights, rule of law, free markets, tough measures on crime, etc. But unless you have a Ph.D. in Physics or will start the next Apple computers, we have plenty of unskilled labor here already. Look, I feel for the guy and I'm empathetic to his plight, I don't think he's an evil person, and our country may be better off having him here working and contributiing to the labor pool, but the law is the law.

I’m Canadian and I firmly agree with Trump on his immigration plans. I was worried that illegals might start trying to come here. Glad to see it didn’t work out. Get in line and do it the right fucking way like all my immigrant friends and their families did asshole.

I am totally against of this Hijab. The lady from Al Huda said that they feel more close to Islam. Wrong, they should do more good work instead of becoming Hujabi. Islam does not say like that. There are many problems with anti-immigrant rhetoric and one of them is the classification who is and who isn't an immigrant and the question of when does a person stop becoming an immigrant and become a Canadian? A significant portion of people living in Canada are first/second/third generation Canadians and so, how do we classify these people, are they immigrants or are they not? And what of their parents/grandparents who immigrated, are they? It's very important to note that without their ancestor parents, all these first/second/third gen Canadians will not be here and they are now 'Canadians' today because we had pro-immigration laws. Also, the idea of accessing services is by itself, very problematic. I spent the first 4 years of my life here paying high tuition fees as well as tax that are used to subsidize fellow Canadians' tuition fees yet I'm not able to access any government services. Following graduation, I worked as a worker on visa where my tax was no less than an average Canadian yet government services were very much inaccessible to me. It was only after I became permanent resident, that somehow everything suddenly became available to me. I have been tax paying 6-7 years before I became a PR here yet all those years, I wasn't able to access a single thing yet somehow, after I became PR, I'm eligible for everything? The tax argument doesn't make sense at all. I will be eligible to apply for citizenship in like a year and does that mean now I am one of you, Canadians?

i hope these Muslim people are working really hard and looking after their family by their own money and not getting any benefits from Canadian government as child benefit or housing benefit like UK !!\nBecause in UK most of these people dont work and they dont pay tax ,plus each family got minimum 4 kids and the government have too look after them and pay for their house rents ...I dont understand why the UK government not stopping that!!! .

I am sorry to make such a frivolous comment on such an important topic but the woman at 19:30 (Bev Ann?) is SO beautiful, like wow. \n\nBut on a more serious note, I think most of us have inherent biases to some degree (those who took these tests and indicated they don't have them - kudos to you). I openly admit I do too, and I think that's difficult to prevent if you've grown up without being exposed to a particular race or ethnicity, so I don't beat myself up about it. I think what we CAN do is make ourselves aware of our inherent biases and try to examine ourselves when we are forming impressions or making decisions about people and make a conscious effort to educate ourselves about and increase our interactions with people with whom we are unfamiliar. Ultimately, it's a fear of the unknown, so the more we know, the less we fear. I have my work cut out for me and I try to make small improvements every day.

I have often wondered why can't we have a healthcare system like Canada's but America spends all of it's money on so many things in the world because of our position on the world stage we just can't work that out, thats what happens when you're the world super power.\n Most Americans have health insurance through their employer, a certain amount is taken out of our paycheck every month and if I get sick or have an emergency I pay a small co pay at the doctors office which is 35 dollars and emergency room co pay is 150 the insurance pays the rest.

Thanks CBC for allowing Asha Tomlinson to work on this video. This is for all Canadians, but most for Black Canadians in Eastern Canada. Cities like Edmonton in particular should be highlighted in this type of videos for their stand on racism. Most cities in Canada are becoming more progressive on racial issues, but Edmonton remains a frightening place for Black people. My message to Blacks in Western Canada is that nothing will change without a challenge. We must stop gossiping about how we are treated and let expose this disease.

Let's all buy ski masks and old fashion goalie masks and go to work and walk the streets like normal ppl, then see what the news says about that.

Most the retail places i am not sure.. and I am not going to say that racism doesn't happen in these stores because i don't know for certain.. but i am going to post something to think about.. If their best buy is like the best buy where I live.. I knew people who worked best buy.. and certain floor reps get paid at least in part via commission.. or at least they use to.. typically the ones that approach you are the ones working to make sales.. they will usually only do so in certain areas though.. such as Computer area, home entertainment area, appliance area, phone area, POSSIBLY game area particularly if they notice you looking at the consoles, and occasionally I get approached when i am looking at personal entertainment stuffs such as the decent headphone and ipod/mp3 player area... If you stick to CDs, movies and stuff that you can just grab .. typically they wont bother you much.. unless you linger there too long.. then a floor rep might think you might need help looking at something.. In my experience they are just overly hover because they have to be.. but unless you are looking at something that is a focus of sales or a board employee finds you .. you almost have to hunt down reps to help you with something..

it's not the religion.... it's the mac's convenience and the corner stores selling tropicana juice for 6 bucks a liter. It's the family oriented hiring policies and the rural area stores being bought and not offering fishing bait, ice or firewood but instead offering dollar store fishing lures for 20 bucks. it's the electronic stores that sell tape decks and old CD players. The stuff that really makes a bad impression is when a muslim family buys a Pizza Pizza or a subway and then changes the restaurant so that there is no where to be seated and the food is processed by someone who won't look me in the eye once and speaks a language that I can't understand to an employer about my sandwich and i will never know what the problem was. I feel like my spanish and native friends treat me the same as them. I feel like the scottish guy who hates me for not waking up at 5 in the morning is only mad because i'm not working as hard as him. I'm saying that maybe a lot of muslims don't want to be our friends and maybe some do... but it seems like they don't want to be my friend but will message a pretty white girl on every single facebook post with paragraphs of physical praise. i probably get a lot of facts wrong... but that world may be too far away for us to acclimate into each others societies. I'd like it though if we could all live in such a manner where we could feel like we aren't all gunning for a chunk of the world.

Where I work ask customers if they need help. The longer they are there the more likely they don't know what they need, and could use help.\n\nHonestly if you linger I'll ask if you need help and so will others.

Having worked in lost prevention for years I can tell you that for certain black people are the most likely to steal. I worked at a store with cameras and casual security. We caught plenty of others before but most of the time it was a black person with baggy clothes.

Remember, this is by the same CBC that put out a casting call for any race, except Caucasians. I know the CBC likes to live in their Toronto-centric bubble where white people are a minority, but the rest of Canada is still overwhelmingly white.\n\nAnd if police were actually allowed to keep race-based stats still, it would show why certain races are profiled. \nMultiracial societies simply do not work.

It's simple. If you don't want to be asked to act like a Canadian, don't come to Canada. Stay where you are comfortable. Our First Nations people were here first -- many of them were matriarchical societies so forcing women to cover themselves is never going to work here.

I don't feel like Bestbuy was accurate since they work on commission. The employees are going to be continuously asking if you need help.

I don't feel angry or upset, because I've experience being followed in a store and I've worked in clothing retail and seen the actual types of people that do steal and to be honest, it doesn't matter the color of the skin or the amount of money a person have, thieves come in all different background. I've seen white women steal, I've seen black women steal, I've seen Hispanic women steal. I've seen a group of people steal, I've seen toddlers steal. What they taught me in retail is just like best buy, you have to make your presence known, but there is a difference between harassment and actually helping the customer. The sad thing is this will never go away as long as people continue to steal. and when you have minorities that do steal, it makes it hard for the other hard working minorities to catch a break.

Black people do not steal more than white people! If the only people you are watching is black and brown people of course that is the only people you will catch. I had a white friend that worked at a Walmart and she said she caught way more white people stealing than blacks but management did not call the police over half the time and let the person go. But for the black people that were caught the police was called every time. I have even seen it myself when the sales person clearly saw the makeup in this white girls pocket, I know she saw it because I silently pointed it out to her and she just walked away. This happens all the time, but white people thinks black and brown people just like to make things up.

I don't understand how we welcome Canadians to our communities without forcing them to leave their religion but we face that when we come to Canada. **Terrorism has no religion**\n\nIn the past, christians had some terrorist groups and it was crazy but it's ignorant to say Christianity is about terrorism!
