Building houses helps nobody who is struggling, they are way too high priced for anyone normal to afford, low income housing is the ticket and they havent increased that proportionally to the need, in decades

I migrated from the UK and really, things aren't much better at home. That's why i'm sticking it out. London rents are equivalent to Toronto, with a similar average salary. UK taxes also look ok on paper, but wheny you include the hidden stuff it's just as bad as canada. Healthcare also going down the gutter. The only positive the UK has over canada is food is much cheaper and if you are able to work from home, you can live away from big cities and pay much less rent. This huge difference between big cities and towns in the UK doesn't seem to be as noticeable in Canada. For an entire 3 bed house with a garden in the north of england, you could get one for $1000/month easy. But there are no job opportunities there at all, so it really is only for WFHers. But I think these issues are sweeping most of the western world... our economic models are built on infinite growth and can't deal with aging populations with an increasing tax burden.

Up until the 1990s, a ditch digger could afford a 'stay at home' wife, children, and a house for them all to live in. Today, a married couple with 2 average income jobs can't afford the kids or the house. The gradually increasing level of taxation has made it too expensive for Canadians to replenish the workforce, in other words, having children and raising the next generation of taxpayers. Arbitrary immigration targets are simultaneously increasing demand and suppressing wage growth. There are better ways to control immigration. I would suggest demand based approach with some guard rails in place. For instance, I would require all educational institutions to provide housing for international student (at least 50%). Businesses should be required to provide accommodation to all temporary/seasonal workers on top of the minimum wage. In order to hire foreigners employers should be required to prove that they are paying enough to afford housing in the region (market cost of accommodation is less than 30% of salary). Accommodation for refugees should be secured before bringing them to the country from around the globe. No accommodation = no permits. It would limit demand and prevent wage suppression.

It has been obvious for a while now that immigration of any kind is no longer beneficial to Canada or in many cases for the immigrant. Housing is out of control expensive and the health care system has deteriorated to alarming levels as there are not enough doctors or nurses or beds to handle the preseent population. Now the prices for food, fuel and most other things have become increasingly expensive and with inflation and interest rates being a concern the issues are pressing from every direction. To be blunt, we do not need any more people entering the country for a few years until more housing can be built, more hospitals can be built, more doctors and nurses hired and inflation and interest rates brought under control. There is evidence that the economy is going to join the party as far as things to worry about and available jobs could lessen, not a good thing.

Every economy gets stronger with job creation. The problem in Canada is that taxes kept on increasing, the housing wasn’t developed adequately that skyrocketed the rents but the job market is just shrinking. Most immigrants from India are from Punjab who look for blue collar jobs but with high inflation they are not able to survive or save anything. So they don’t find it lucrative anymore. The new students should do their due diligence before coming otherwise they are going to struggle!

Most in New Brunswick like the low rating because it keeps people from moving here. Well, until covid happened. Because we managed COVID well, over 50,000 people moved here; most from ON, and that sent our housing market crazy. Many home values increased by $250,000 and that has created a housing crisis here because New Brunswickers don't make as high wages as most others. I've been in every province and territory in Canada and they all have there pluses and minuses. Which, is why I find these videos more entertaining then of any real value.

This story is misleading and the Title is completely false. Canada's Student population doubled in 3 years and Canada went from 7th highest Foreign Student Population per capita to 2nd, so the Canadian Student housing situation worsened quickly. So the Trudeau Government put a cap on Foreign Students and offered low interest loans to Universities to immediately expand Student housing. Canada has seen NO drop in citizen applications and still refuses far more applications then it approves. So with even Canada's low birth rate still combined with immigration Canada's population is the fastest growing per capita of Western Democracies at an annual population increase of over 1 million people a year. So the Headline about Citizen applications which had nothing to do with the story of Foreign Students.\nAlso I want to add they stated that the gentleman had set up a business to bring home students from Canada when in the interview he stated that Canada was only one of the Countries but stating it the true way is less dramatic and doesnt fit their Narrative. Also the story was clipped from India a Nation that has been ata diplomatic war with Canada for a year after their Government Murdered a Canadian Landed Citizen. Western countries didn’t build enough housing after 2008 because the policy has been to increase the price of real estate to protect assets and pension funds to pay for the retirement and medical care of the boomer generation.

Canada is a dump now after 8 years of the liberal government. I moved here in 2017 and surprised to see how fast a country can deteriorate. Now unless you are rich and enjoy the boring culture and cold weather, simply don’t come to Canada. Everything is unaffordable and the government purposely let in so many immigrants to compete for necessities like housing. I made 130k last year but still far from owning a place. Although I get raises every year, my paycheck remains similar if not less because of increasing taxes and living cost let alone weaker purchasing power due to inflation. Canada becomes a playground for the wealthy who can speculate in the housing markets and some socialists who enjoy being broke and woke.

How about you get an education in your own country. I'm Aussie and we set limits on our own people at University and their education so that they can profit of foreign students, most being from China and India even though they have the 2nd and 3rd highest GDP's in the world and 1st and 2nd highest populations in the world, so they should be able look after their own instead of jeopardising the education of our own, but then Goverment will say we need to increase immigration to 400,000 a year ( just hit 27 million, 2 decades before we ment too) of mainly skilled workers who got their skill and education from our nation instead from their own people. Cost of living has gone up due to immigration, plain and simple. The increased market demand from immigrants is not being met by the supply, which means the market inflates. This is economy 101. If there is something people want (housing), the more people who want it and the less of it there is, the more it will cost. Immigration is *dircetly* affecting the housing crisis in an objectively negative way. *Acknowledge it.*\n\nIf you *don't* think that bringing *500,000* new people into the country *every year* is going to further inflate the market then you are delusional. There is not only already too many people in this country for the government and market to handle, but the government's solution is to bring in even more! *They are literally exacerbating the problem before our very eyes.*

Isn't it usually the government's fault for impeding new housing projects? The free market would have responded to the increase in housing demand rapidly without the bureaucracy. Of course, although I say free market, building codes, safety regulations, and sustainability should still be followed. But the bottleneck to more housing is usually government control/special interest groups, and not engineering challenges, which have mostly been solved.

23 years of zero interest rates has created serious inflation in RE and stocks. Plus, the arrival of hundreds of thousands of newcomers who also need housing increased demand.

Canadians are learning by the process of elimination and will soon realise that the surge in population was not the main reason for the increase on housing prices or rents. The one thing no one really talks about is how giant corporations are gobbling up starter houses for smaller families which is driving the demand up and inflating the prices. These corporations have far bigger influence on housing prices than the immigrants ever will. But overall lowering the immigration eases some pressure from the system, but we need to get to the real problem.

There is another reason for migration in Punjab that is increasing population same piece land gets divided over generations and its not enough to sustain families so they prefer to send at least one brother out of country while other do farming the one that goes abroad help with school fees, construction of house, cars, etc. if there was a job here they wouldn't move out previous generations use to go in army for same reason.

First visited Toronto in late 2019, it was my first time in Canada - loved it!! Went for a family wedding, the taste of Toronto that I got during that trip, left a really positive impression on me - the space, it was clean, the quality of life looked idyllic. Then the global pandemic happened, I always kept up with the news of what was happening in Toronto and have noticed how it has changed. The crime seemed to just increase from out of nowhere, housing costs increased. My relatives and I keep in touch and they have told me how Toronto has changed.

Ban all immigration for the next 25 years. Unfortunately (not surprisingly!) Canada has once again screwed over its citizens in favor of votes. The biggest problem is obviously housing, and while Canada has never in its history built more than 200K homes in a year, last year in 2024 Canada let in over 1M immigrants which equals 8 years of housing construction, while the Liberals have an immigration quota for 500K immigrants per year. Canada has to ban all immigration including International students for the next 2 decades. It will take Canada 20 years to build enough housing to increase inventory and lower the actual cost of housing, essentially bursting the largest housing bubble the world has ever seen.

The reliance on tuition dollars to cover basic operational costs is an inevitable result of decades of government austerity policies that have systematically gutted the post-secondary and other public sectors. The disparity between domestic and international tuition costs followed, a disparity that has been gradually increasing as universities find themselves in increasingly desperate financial situations - with limited sources of revenue. If direct government payments were increased to pre-1990 levels (and I would be willing to bet that most Canadians would approve of their tax dollars supporting education and training programs for Canadians), it would allow universities and colleges to manage their finances without disproportionate reliance on tuition - in particular international tuition. Bottom line - resuming adequate and equitable funding for post-secondary education must be front of mind while discussing the implications of lack of housing for international students. The point about cuts to public funding is underplayed and not well-contextualized in this CBC analysis - which just barrels on to band-aid fixes (like capping numbers or building more housing). The funding model itself needs to be fixed. Let's change the model from provincial to a provincial/federal hybrid funding model. And while we're at it, let's revise the funding model for healthcare. Why not do a sequel segment on that.

As a realtor in London, I agree that we feel the pressure on our rental market. Rent has increased dramatically in the past 5 years. Growing families that rent are choosing to live with less space and stay where they are to keep costs down. rents could more than double by going to a new home (depending on how long they have lived in their current hime and the larger unit they will then move to.) I love our international students and support many of them find housing, but it doesn’t take away from the crisis we see. Since Covid our homeless population has exploded along with surrounding communities like St. Thomas and Woodstock.

The Trudeau government massively messed this up. Trudeau and his naive idealism without any downstream planning or collaborating with the Provinces and major Municipalities. Massive increase in immigration, and more significantly massive influx of refugees and temporary workers are all Federal responsibilities. The Trudeau government is using foreign students influx as a fault, because it deflects the issue of the lack of housing on students. Wagging the dog will not solve this problem.

Immigration is less integral to the economy than we think. A trivial increase GDP growth wage growth, is meaningless when housing costs can go up 20% per year. Even other costs are going up because retailers rent is so damn high. I have a family member who is dying because of healthcare backlogs and i have untreated injuries right now because the doctor told me it would be a 6 month wait for a cat scan. Im scared for the future, but at least they gave us MAID .

People think its an easy thing as a full stop on students would do. Its not as easy because that inflow of cash should be replaced with somewhere in the economy, if not citizens will have to pay for it by increased taxes and goods of all products would still rise including housing. Then yes housing will be sufficient but even though demand reduces, prices wont be budging.

The graph at the beginning was a little misleading. Showing massive increase of 1m+ last year, that is actual number increase for a country of 40million now, which looks alarming (or impressive) on a graph. Back in the late 1950s we increased 600k on a population of 17m. Our growth RATE today is .85%, in 1959 it was 2.99%... it's not to many people people, it's too too few houses being built!

With the rate of immigration increasing, Canadian born children will have no place in the future in terms of career, housing, etc and they might end up leaving Canada

Its not only CANADA which has high cost of living, here in NZ too..,housing cost is high , health care is stillcoping up, but long wait also in the hospital is the same as u r complaining in Canada, but during winter,it is not that bad because we dont have snow here, only in some part of the country.. immigration increases due to need of people coming to finance the needs of the country which Is global, i think....

Fabulous video! US viewer here. But we often vacationed in Quebec’s Laurentians and our daughter went to Ontario’s University of Toronto for her undergraduate degree about 15 years ago. UofT was rigorous, to say the least, but she did it in 4 years, unlike some of her peers. She LOVED it, and made many friends, including internationals. They’ve stayed close on FB, and even get together (some flying in from other countries, including the Middle East and Asia) every 2 years or so back in Toronto. We’ve found the easiest way to make friends is by going to university or college together and living in residence, rather than once we’ve enter the workforce.\n\nThat said, and as unpolite as it may be, the root of Canada’s problems are exactly its politics. IMO Canada’s misguided liberal policies are to blame for its stratospheric taxes, cost of housing, increasing crime, tolerant drug culture, and deteriorating health care system. That Canada now encourages voluntary euthanasia to reduce health care costs should say it all. Margaret Sanger would be proud. And it promises to get worse as long as Justin Trudeau and his ilk are in power. His lionizing climate change intervention at the expense of what really impacts Canadians is sheer madness. The decline happen when the Liberals took power and because of the increase of population (highest growth rate in G7 countries), services suffer (health, housing, high cost of groceries).

This is a national and global problem. Western countries have hit their economic growth peak and the rich are hiding their money. It's easy to blame foreign home buyers which in Toronto and Vancouver is a legitimate part of the housing problem but it more so has to do with some people not paying their equal share while they profit off of our labor and our spending. The system only works if the money comes back and creates some level of spending. The only issue we have with immigration is the downward push on wages and the Fast Pace at which it's happening because local infrastructure including housing Healthcare and transportation cannot accommodate such a rapid increase and again it's happening mostly in the big cities. This worked in the twenties and the 50s and the 70s to bring in mass number of immigrants because we had big economic growth at the time. We have the poorest industrial policy out of the G8 countries it's Dreadful it doesn't even exist
