I think this is an initial step of Trump trying to get Canada’s natural resources. I don’t know how it would play out, but that’s the only thing I can make sense of based on Trump’s broader actions and comments.

Cars, parts, food etc are not manufactured in Canada for the cheaper labor - it is just as expensive there. Making some things there was just more efficient, and therefore a good business decision, and then there are the resources they provide to the USA, the oil alone is responsible for the trade deficit. You mention that Americans are 30% more expensive than Canadians but you dont mention that the US is far more unequal with a Gini coefficient of 0.41 vs 0.35 in Canada. Now there is also a known issue with using GDP data to calculate productivity and that is that in sme countries the labor of GDP is much lower than in others. You then end up with Irish productivity being the second highest in the world only because most large US corporations operating in the EU register there to pay lower taxes but most of that revenue is just on paper for Ireland. or with Guyana whose oil and mining revenue makes it productivity equal to that of the US. And whilst housing and NIMBYIsm is real issue you have very similar issues in the US which also has almost no mix zoning. But throw in safety nets and go ask Canadians if they want to change for the US system. I doubt most will. If my country doesn't get housing costs under control they're in serious trouble. The average house in the town I live in is something like 900K and there's basically no local economy. With costs so high I can't afford to start a family. We can’t even get the right help to take care of my in-laws who are both suffering from dementia and we can’t afford to put them in a nursing. If you are in America and you are a citizen enjoying all that America has to offer and you hate our federal immigration law and you hate police doing their jobs and you hate whatever wrong America has done in the past, I challenge you to leave and go find that perfect county that can offer you all that America can and will live up to your ideals of perfection not just now but through everything they have done in the past. Anyone with any sense would see this situation as a terrible breakdown of life in this city. Things have gotten progressively worse over the last four years. The leaders of the city, esp. the City Council president are truly despicable. Ordinary hard-working people, commuters, businessman, children, seniors are all being endangered by this influx of illegals. And as you pointed out, the leaders of this city are siding with the ones destroying the city and making it unlivable.
