Trudeau resigned as prime minister because he was deeply unpopular in Canada. He proceeded to suspend parliament while President Trump threatened these Tariffs and then immediately left to Europe to posture with European leaders. He did absolutely nothing to strengthen the US/Canadian relationship while his party set about appointing (not electing) a new leader. Trudeau is an actor and a hypocrit. Do not believe anything he says. Now I don't agree with President Trump's tariffs on American allies like Canada. I don't understand the metrics he's using to justify them. Maybe there is a real reason, but this fool that you're listening to has not represented Canada faithfully and I reject everything he says.

Right now, he's basically just doing photo ops in Ukraine, UK and anywhere else on our dime because Parliament is prorogued and the party in power, Liberal, is having a leadership race. So, while he may resign within the week once that leadership race is done, he's still technically in charge.\n\nWhat makes that race and the PM's prorogation so bad is that we're in the middle of a crisis - several actually - caused in part directly by Trudeau and his Liberals (and the NDP supporting them). What no one is talking about is the fact that when the next census is done all these illegals will be counted and new congregational seat will be awarded to liberal states with increased population goving them an advantage in the House of Representatives. Canada has been doing virtually nothing to stem the flow of fentanyl precursors into their country (on ships from China) and out across the U.S. border. That is the most pressing reason for the Trump tariffs.

The tariffs were to incentivise Canada and Mexico to help stop the flow of fentanyl into the u.s. the tariffs didn't need to happen. if these governments helped curb drug flow by securing their own borders there wouldn't have been tariffs. I’ve read many comments urging Canada to reduce its exposure to the us. It’s reasonable but that doesn’t happen overnight. Refineries, for example, are custom built - they can’t process all crudes. They’d cost several billion to build and at least 3-5 years; plus, you need railways and port infrastructure to ship out oil or its byproducts. This should have been started in 2017 (trump’s 1st term). In the short term, free trade zones within Canada and Mexico may alleviate some of the tariffs.

I'm just speculating, but obviously Trump's stated reasons for the tariffs against Canada don't reflect his real strategy. He wants to exert maximum pain and pressure on the current liberal government in Canada so that its more likely a conservative like Poilievre will get elected. Then, he'll end the tariffs handing him a victory and thus solidifying a conservative influence. Maybe. In any case, he wants more influence over Canada and its unnerving to watch.
