In 1986 I went to Toronto and was out to see a friend in an upper middle class neighborhood. Their dog got loose late one night and I was chasing it down the street…some cops rolled up and asked if I needed any help, and I said no. They left. Th at would not have happened in some white areas in Los Angeles then. They would have thrown the dog a Billy club and they all would have been beating in me! I almost moved to Canada right then!

The socioeconomic flaws are much difficult to compare considering the very foundations that birthed America as well as its intricate and dense population. There are variety of implications that comes to accommodating a diverse population of 380 million which is 10 times the population of Canada (these can also be structural). The rent in Montreal is not as high relative to major urban cities in America simply because of the demand. People simply do not want to live in Montreal at the same rate that they do for places like San Francisco and New York. Moreover, places like New York and San Francisco, (this can also include Toronto/Vancouver), have rigorous rent controls as well as zone restriction laws that limits the capacity for home builders to produce affordable housing, (especially when compared to Quebec). I live in Canada, but I even I must admit that economic success and freedom is much higher in the U.S. Name me another Western country with more african Billionaires/Millionaires than America? Canada is immensely reliant on Government to regulate trade and commerce and due to our lack of entrepreneurial spirit, I expect that we will remain a commodity-based economy for decades. This is especially a sad reality if interest rates continue to rise, as it will negatively impact the purchasing power of our dollar which is indexed to commodities . \n \nCheers,

USA has whole neighborhoods that are crappy, Canada has pockets. Edmonton, Alberta, around 2006-2008 was nicknamed Deadmonton, not only cause winter is terrible, but because it had the highest murder rate per capita in all of North America. That said, it is a great city.

While the cost of living is higher in the U.S., they do make more on average so I'm not sure I'd say Canada is significantly better in that regard. On that note though, it's probably better to be poor in Canada than in the U.S.

?I'm American, grew up next to Canada and have worked in Europe for years. This conversation is about 90% bullshit - these places are essentially the same. They all have fast food. They all have their own crime issues and transportation issues. Their health care systems are all dysfunctional, all complained about and ranted against _constantly,_ until they have to be stubbornly defended against criticism by some foreigner for egotistical, xenophobic reasons. Not one of them is measurably better or worse than any of the others. It's all a lot of self-important fucking nonsense.

Sounds like life in major cities might indeed be better in Canada, and I wouldn't be surprised. I think major cities in the US blow. I like to avoid them when possible. \n\nI don't know if I agree on the food though. You can find spots pretty easy in most places, and I have been to some serious backwaters.

I love America for its weather. I live in the DMV area. Having 4 seasons is amazing. Same reason I won’t move to cali or Florida. Same weather drives people crazy. Never visited Canada but will love to someday. Also it’s so true about diversity. It’s the same all over the states. There is an illusion of diversity.

There is no country more similar to America than Canada. I've lived in many different Countries throughout my life however my experiences in the states and Canada were very similar. The only major difference was safety and in Canada, there is not as much classism. If your poor in America its going to suck however you will have it much easier in Canada. I think if you got money America is a better nation for you. However if your poor/low middle class Canada is a better place for you. But overall I find both nations to be very similar culturally. In my view, Americans and Canadians are essentially the same people.

Well....that's what happens when Canada's population is about the same as Texas ??‍♂️??‍♂️. More people= more problems. Also, isnt it like 90% of Canadaians are primarily living in one to 2 areas? So Im not surprised on the cost difference, crime difference, etc. I like Canada but in comparison, it's smaller so less chance of issues. Especially in a first world country

The best part of America isn't the cities, although I'd guess that's the same about Canada. The only part of Canada I've been to is British Columbia above Glacier National Park and it was lovely. The best cities in America weren't mentioned: San Diego, Boise, Pittsburg, Salt Lake, Austin, etc.

In the US, I only was allowed 5 weeks off after having my baby, because I took off about 4 days before my baby was born due to Early Labor!! I also was only paid HALF my salary. They wanted me to return to work while I was still in pain, my daughter was having swallowing difficulties which continued for 3 years, and I was having PPA! It is awful. We are moving to Canada this year for many reasons but maternity leave, childcare costs, and safety are some of the most important reasons!

Actually, in Québec Canada, you can wait several years before getting a family doctor. I moved to Sherbrooke Québec Canada and I got my family doctor after my diabetic and eye doctors. I waited a bit over 4 years before I got a family doctor.

Whilst I agree with some things you mentioned, let me know where it's better than Canada. I lived in the US and it was no better at all. It was work work work with no life and not much family time. Only very rich people in both Canada and USA don't pay much taxes because of the loopholes. The CRA and IRS mostly go after people who are struggling to put food on the table. \n\nI had a major operation that cost over $350 000,00 in Canada. I don't even know what I would have done if I was in the US with shortfalls, many people go bankrupt due to medical expenses. I am grateful I didn't pay anything. The health issues you mentioned are everywhere due to covid that has ravaged systems in most countries. It is very easy when you are healthy and not faced with a hefty medical bill to say negative stuff. When you are desperate like I was then you count your blessings. \n\nTalk of racism and discrimination, it is everywhere. I spent 2 years (1991/92) in Calgary and I fully understand the feeling. Canada simply has not enough quality job. For better job satisfaction and higher pay, you need to head south to get it. Canada is for someone who is looking for a peaceful life and have more private time but not a very social life style. The medical system needs some improvement though. Compared with the time (70s last century) I spent in England, I would say England is much better because Europe is so close and you could enjoy the diverse culture and food. Anyway, everybody has his/her own choice and that is good.
