As a Canadian who lives in (largely French-speaking) Quebec, I don't know if our gov't even NEEDS to tariff American consumer goods, the people here are already boycotting US goods and companies en masse. EVERYBODY is doing it - and the pace isn't going to recede anytime soon. Even after the Orange Turd is long gone, trust me, Canadians will remember this! The American state has proven it cannot be trusted. They have unilaterally broken the trade agreement (negotiated by the previous Donald J Chump administration) on the flimsiest of reasons, the 00.2 % of fentanyl that flows over the border into the US from Canada. That deal now obviously not worth the paper it was signed on.

I wonder why King Charles has chosen to give Trump a State Visit when Trump has declared economic war on part of his 'commonwealth'? Trump should remember that King Charles is also de-facto head of the Canadian state - Trudeau is the King's 'Prime Minister'. As a Brit, I stand with Canada and will boycott American goods for the rest of my life - no forgiveness!

I'm Danish - we have a big movement in Denmark to boycot American goods. The US has failed in so many ways. They will learn - perhaps to late - what the price is. In the mean time I urge people around the world who supports Ukraine, Mexico, Canada and Europe - who supports the right to freedom - to buy goods from each other. Lets join together with Japan, Australia, South Korea etc - let's show the US that YES, they were important - yes they WERE the leaders of the free world - but they lost the right to that title the moment they selected Trump for president again. Let's show them what real bravery is and what real freedom is!

As an American I just want to point out that not all Americans are at fault for this. MAGAts are to blame, and we're looking to deport them in 4 years time, so it's good that Canada is investing in their border controls.

The American people who voted for Trump ought to be totally ashamed - he is only interested with his good friend Putin and wants to strip Ukraine of his precious minerals. Stay strong Canada and play him at his own game.

As an American I apologize for absolutely nothing. \n\nThat being said Trudeau did good here. Id trade him for Trump in a heart beat.

I’m an American from Georgia ….this is just sad! I am just ashamed of our government. Good for Canada…. Don’t back down, stand firm. Very well spoken.

Sings great but no Trudy you haven’t done big things and don’t get to take credit for the good men that came before you. Good job taking the opportunity given here however I see another limp D trying to save his embarrassing career. But good for you getting all these gullible people to buy it. Half truths do not make the truth whole. 75 years of industrial decline aren’t getting fixed with friendly assurances and happy trade deals. During WW2 everyone lived on food rations, turned in all metals, kept their old cars running etc… and y’all are upset because inflation means you have to make some tough choices? I’m ashamed of every American that refuses to try something new since the last 50 years of the same old back and forth is what got us here in the first place. Obstruction and diversion. Division. Both parties are responsible. If Donald wants to destroy the faith of his faithful… let him. But going radical against half the country’s people isn’t going to end well for anyone. We should stop giving the rich all the cards.

Trump is the biggest idiot ever.... Americans .... good vote.... your are also idiots.... good luck

I almost forgot what an actual leader sounds like. It's sad that so many of my fellow Americans let fear mongering and hate take root in their psychy to the point they thought a barely literate megalomaniac was the best choice to lead the country. This is one of the rare being black in this country is a benefit. We're used to being overburdened and neglected, so it's nothing new to us. But, everyone else is in for a rough ride. Good luck.

So, Trudy, has his panties in a bunch. WTF did he think was going to happen, he has ZERO leverage in a trade battle. The Canadian auto industry will collapse. Canada does not have a car line; the entire Canadian auto industry is to supply the American auto makers. If those goods and services are now 25% more those jobs will be brought back to the US. But hey Canada voted for this socialist, he just and into a much better and smarter capitalist.
|

Well 25% tariffs from Mexico and 25 % from Canada, You Americans, for your own good and for democracy better impeach your president and his people.

We’re not anti- American, we’re anti-dictatorship. We are supportive of the good Americans. We didn’t take their jobs, savings and are decimating your country the idiots that voted this dictator in because their greed of becoming rich did it. You’ve been suckered, don’t put that on us. Take some responsibility for your own fucking mess. We didn’t shit on you! YOU CREATED THIS WORLD WIDE MESS.

Nothing but two people trying to do what they think is best for their own countries. I'm not mad at that, but Trudeau for the sake of his country, will make it harder on us by his tarrifs which tells me how much she really cares for Americans, not more than his. Which I'm fine with. You have to take care of your own, but tit for tat isn't good for anyone.

So are we pretending that Canada hasn't already had enormous tariffs on American goods?
|

Good for you Justin. As an American senior, I am afraid for my life. If they take my social security and health care, I will be homeless and die. Please, everyone, fight that bastard in the white house anyway you can.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
It's simple Trudeau. Remove the tariffs THAT WERE ALREADY IN PLACE on American goods before Trumps tariffs were placed; Trumps tariffs goes away. Keep thinking that you can beat the US economy, and he will crush yours.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
as an American, Good on Canada. Go For It. We are sick of this mess and we know you didn't start it.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
Good for them, they should raise those tariffs to double what they are right now. Make US pay! These policies are not what many Americans voted for ?
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
It will be the American people who will end up worse off putting tariffs on goods coming into the country, you got what you voted for, wake up & smell the coffee Trumps promises are FAKE promises….

A summer of austerity for 36 million Canadians vs a summer of austerity for 365 million Americans. Good luck. I am really curious about what the MAGA and other Americans will do next.

|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
I guess everyone in America is good with spending 7.3 billion dollars of their tax money on only 8 charging stations built with the money earmarked for infrastructure improvements in the U.S. most of us Americans are complete idiots.

We will survive because we are united as one. We have great leaders leading this war. We will survive. Many Canadians are doing their part by not buying American goods anymore. God protect our brave nation. Thank you, Prime Minister and Premier Ford.

It’s time to do the same in all countries and then let’s see what Americans will eat. Starlink satellites may be good with bread

Fellow US Americans it’s time to stand up. We cannot allow the Oligarchy to succeed here. Many have been deceived into believing that these men had the US people in mind as they came to power and it has been greatly proven that all Trump and Musk care about is strong arm power to become something anti American. Donald Trump should be seen as the highest risk to our national security today. He wants to weaken our country not make it great, harming our allies opens us up as a target for our enemies. \n\nCanada, beautiful nation, the US American people are so sorry, you have done nothing to earn this treatment. Boycott US goods, use any power you have to fight back against wannabe dictator Trump. Ukrainians, we are so sorry. The greater US People do not want this and we do not want Trump. \n\nUS people, keep boycotting these oligarchs while they leisure, don’t let them rest in peace, they don’t deserve it. We are the ones who are paying while they vacation and dine on our dimes, stolen from us.

Secondly Trudeau, why hadn't you done this before? Why hadn't you invested in all this imaging, drones etc to stop fentanyl immigration and the harmful things that you knowingly allowed to enter America? Secondly, why are the tariffs so disapproportionately unfair for the American goods if they can even get there at all. But yours are being sold for pretty much not much of an increase

I won't travel to the US. And I'm doing my best to boycott American goods. Sorry, American cousins, but we have to protect ourselves.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, raised U.S. import duties significantly to protect domestic farmers and businesses. Sponsored by Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis Hawley, the act increased tariffs on over 20,000 goods by an average of 40% to 60%\n\nAlthough intended to shield American industries during the Great Depression, the act backfired. It led to retaliatory tariffs from over 25 countries, a collapse in global trade, and exacerbated the economic downturn. U.S. exports and imports fell by two-thirds between 1929 and 1932. Economists widely regard it as one of the most disastrous economic policies in U.S. history.

Shut up Justin. You ain’t going to fight for anything. I don’t see him or the media talking about all the tariffs Canada has had against American goods for decades.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
Well done, PM Trudeau. You made us proud as Canadians. You said it like it is. Donald, and I noticed you refrained from calling him President Trump because he is certainly not acting like a president, Donald is siding with our enemies, snuggling up to a malicious dictator rather than taking a stand for right and for the common good. He has absolutely no reason to impose tariffs and is actually breaking legal agreements to do so, but we all know that Trump believes he is above the law. If you like this speech, go and listen to Premier Ford of Ontario as he threatens to tariff all the energy which flows into the States or even just cut it off. Nobody wins in this war, certainly not Americans. But Elon and Donald don't care. They are filthy rich and will just plan chaos and world domination in their sandbox while everyone else in the USA takes the hit.

It is time to understand Trump only exposes pretext that aren't really his concerned he just want to have an excuse to do what he wants to do and this is grabbing some resources punching external allies etcetera it is time to understand that nothing will please Donald Trump government so it is time to bypass America this is very sad for some of us that have made business with American businesses and companies it is not easy it is not good to overnight rethink everything because of that guy in the White House

As an American, I want to say that I have never seen a more toxic administration in my life. Not only are they hurting Americans but they are hurting Americas longstanding allies. This will not end well for us as Americans. This both hurts me and scares me. It’s sad that there are Americans that think this administration is doing a good job. God bless us all!?

This will cause much damage to the economy and the American people, but it will help the billionaires enrich themselves even more. They always know how to use a good economic crisis to their advantage.

I'm not American. I grew up hearing lots of hate bout USA cuz the US doesn't exactly have a good rep in foreign policies - always bullying other nations, starting wars for oil etc. but I've always preferred USA not just for the world order it brings, it allows different voices, criticism & scolding towards its leaders compared to China, Russia & North Korea. \n\nin the US, you can talk bad bout politicians in power, or probably make movies bout these kind of things like US invading other countries for oil, or testing out some cruel AI military robots on humans (movie name: Monsters of Man), & you won't be persecuted. but after looking at a bunch of executive orders Trump has signed, the way he (& JD Vance) treated Zelenski & Canada, I don't know if I still feel the same bout USA anymore.\n\nif USA doesn't wanna continue spending on Ukraine, perhaps USA shouldn't have sweet talked Ukraine into denuclearization thru the 1994 Budapest Memorandum. that's what you get for mendling with other countries' affairs. by stopping US aid & wanting a new mineral deal, Trump's refusing to follow the Memorandum (I added this sentence thru edit as I can't reply to the comment below).\n\nunderstandably, US & UK don't need to deploy troops in Ukraine as the security assurance in the memorandum wasn't clearly defined, but it also didn't mention that Ukraine should pay the US back financially, nor any mineral concessions. \n\nTrump always wanting a purely 1 sided deal will only isolate USA from more allies.

Canada supplies up to 40% of American power so an export tariff would cripple the US, its economy isn't good
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
All of this was avoidable. We could have had a reasonable leader use logic and good sense to move our country forward. But no, just enough Americans willingly voted for vengeance, or chaos, or a combination of both. Another group felt it was too damn difficult to do their own research before they cast their vote. And now, everyone will suffer greatly for the mad king's folly.
|
| 2025-03-04 | 0 |
It's going to be a lot easier for other countries to boycott American good than for us to avoid buying tariffed imports because nothing is made here. We are SO fucked.
|

As an American I would love to put an end to this stupid trade war and get back on good terms with the Canadian people. But unfortunately I don't get to make the decisions around here.
