Sadly home ownership is unaffordable in most Western countries, Australia, the Uk , Europe is the same despite a varied number of governments from the Left and Right. Canada does not stand out alone.

My daughter is nearing the end of 2 great years in Canada on an IEC (backpacker) visa from Australia. She’s loved the people, the landscape (mostly lived in BC and Alberta) , and working there…. She picked up interesting jobs, worked very hard, just about made ends meet, has been great. \n\nShe was even offered a permanent job by a major Canadian co last year (she was working for them on a one year role at the time) that would’ve paved the way for her to apply for PR…but she turned it down without a second thought….. for all the reasons you would know about \n\n- Wages aren’t great (maybe 20% less than australia), \n\n- taxes are high (incl having to pay CPP…in australia the employer pays all pension contributions, on top of wages), \n\n- groceries prices out of kilter, \n\n- rents consume most of what’s left…. \n\n- AND, even if you could save a deposit for a house, or shoebox apartment….what’s the point, could never afford it. \n\nShe’s seen nearly all her Canadian friends resigned to their fate of being perennial renters, of being perpetually skint. It’s no life. She’s sad to see it - coming from a country of perpetual optimism and opportunity, to learn over time how such a (on many levels) similar country isn’t like that, that has somehow got it all so wrong. \n\nIf you are thinking of “australia” as your answer, it’d be a fair call\n\n- Avoid Sydney if you can (a less expensive Vancouver) but rest of the place is “workable”. \n\n- Average wage in Perth is $100k (C$90k) and average house (full size…not an apt or townhouse) price is about $700k (C$630k) …so do-able, if tight to start with, for youngsters (like you..!) \n\n- I’ve been to Vancouver’s East Hastings St, and so can confirm is nowhere close to that in Oz. Are sketchy parts of all cities, but it’s definitely not community wide\n\n- are small pockets of homelessness (esp but not only indigenous community) but the governments are mostly (sort of…) “on it” \n\n- sun, sea, sand… and the sharks rarely come close to shore!

India is the largest source of skilled migration to nations like Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc. Skilled, unskilled seems people are leaving in droves, means something is certainly wrong there!!

Canada's TFW scheme is just nutso, and that's coming from an Australian who is living with many of the same pressures as Canada in 2024. You have roughly 40 million people - about 12 million more than Australia - and some genius decided that importing 3 million people from the subcontinent was a GOOD idea ? Like Australia, the majority of your population is clustered in a small number of cities - new arrivals are going to head straight for the path of least resistance. No shame in that (I lived in a notorious 'ghetto' dominated by foreigners in Thailand) but it was never going to be well received by the locals. Toronto and Vancouver, anyone ? Hey, I guess if it works the pollies will be hailed as geniuses, but the growing pains in both countries won't disappear in a single election cycle.

3 million Indians injected into a country of less than 40 million people is insane - what was Canada thinking ?? They had to know that the TFW's would flock to a small number of cities - just as many Indians have done here in Australia. Both countries have absorbed a large population of Chinese fleeing HK and mainland China, but apparently they aren't breeding fast enough. Any moves to restrict the influx of people from the subcontinent is purely a reaction to the backlash politicians have face for trying to fix everything in a single decade.

I see a lota comments saying this is one-sided. I cant speak for anyone else but this has been my experience as well... I've been to the Indian Embassy in Wellington, Nz multiple times to submit my applications passport renewal, police clearance etc and girls at the counter were unnecessarily rude & very unhelpful.. I've never received this sort of treatment from kiwis in Nz especially those sitting at customer service desks. I'd worked in Customer service for 7+ years and its very sad to see Indians (not all; some are good but very rare) are the worst and rudest to deal with. Because of this Indian generally have a very bad reputation in Nz; and by the looks of it, in Canada & Australia too..

Lived in Canada 14 years, and now in Australia and I have to say Australia is way better. I'm from Russia but live in Australia. We have the same problems but at least it's warm and sunny. There is no way I'd want to ever live in Canada.

Canadian government has to adopt Australian model for immigration and student visa. I lived in Australia and in 2009 indian students protested against Australian immigration policy , Within 6 months of crackdown 1200 low quality colleges were shut down by government and thousands of international students including me were Struggling and left Australia but that was i think good for Australia. Same needed to be done by Canada. 70% of students come to earn money and do 2-3 jobs and Canadians are struggling while employers getting cheaper labor and making money..

Dont cut immigration down.....tell me how did Indian intl student makes up about more than 80% out of all international students. Why didnt the government put a cap or a stop specifically just for Indian people? Why didnt the immigration look deep before giving student visa just like a snap of a finger and see if they can support themselve for school and living expense. \n\nI am an immigrant myself but when i decided to come to canada as a student. I made sure i had enough funds to sustain myself here in canada for 2 years until i can get my work permit then a head to PR. Nowdays I see a lot of international Students get access or abusing goverment facilities and benefits for which not entitle for them but Canadian residence only (PR or Canadian Citizen). I never ask for Cerb when covid happen, never ask food bank my part time job can fullfill that, paid my fare for using transportation, paid my rents and utilities on time and paid my credit cards. Lastly i never complaint focus on my study and I get good high paying jobs. I am proud to contribute to Canadian Economy as an Immigrant.\n\nThe question is are they doing the same? If you cannot sustain yourself dont add your burden to the country. We (Canadian Residence) paid heavy taxes from our sweat to cover ur burden and debt. Canada stop following the USA as to crime and justice - all governments need to enforce drugs as a crime and make it unacceptable.
