I lived in Brampton when its populations was 16,000 and it had a wooden bridge that crossed the Etobicoke Creek that ran across Hwy10 south at Meadowland park. It was washed away in 1965 flood. Small town, very 'orange', ie. Scottish protestant. Zero ethnics. Heck, they even hated the Catholics and wouldn't let them build the first Catholic church without a battle. It had one cinema downtown that charged .25cents for kids and .50cents for an adult ticket. It had a public pool that all the kids peed in during the summer and a red brick library which we went to religiously, every Friday to change our books. That town has completely disappeared. I used to drive to Brampton once a month for a meeting but decided driving into Brampton was such a risky behaviour especially on Bovaird, that I stopped going. Brampton has lost it character and exploded into a monstrous tract of cookie cutter box houses and strip malls. No one knows anyone else and there are no real neighbourhoods. If this is progress, give me the good old days when we could ride our bikes up and along Kennedy Road to Heart Lake conservation and go wading in the creek looking for tadpoles all day.

I was at the Post office, Tim Hortons, Bus stop, either 5 Indians playing on their phones with more than 20 people in line, or they just open the back door and let everybody ride the bus for free. My cousin passed away last week waiting for his visa. He was a young hardworking engineer waiting to get into this country. He was a fluent speaker in English who understood politics in Canada, community, and family. I almost forgot what an actual leader sounds like. I could honestly write an entire book about this—I’ve been living in Costa Rica for the past three years, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. My personal experience has been okay, because I was lucky enough to be contracted directly by the company, so I didn’t have to deal with any agencies (best-case scenario). I am constantly annoyed by the following, but because I was born in Canada, I would be cancelled for saying the things you can. I am also Indian. Here’s the list that comes to mind. I might come back and edit this because I am sure there are things I am forgetting: \n\n- coughing into your elbow instead of your hands (literally watched a guy yesterday on the bus cough into his hands then put his hands onto the support bar)\n\n- Standing to the side and letting people off the train so you can get on instead of trying to walk through people who are trying to get off \n\n- Standing up and moving to the side to let somebody off on an inside seat of the bus. I have a butt. I don’t want to be squeezing by you \n\n- Taking off their backpack while standing on the bus and putting it between their legs\n\n- Moving to the back of the bus instead of crowding by the doors\n\n- Standing in lines to get onto the bus instead of crowding\n\n- Not littering. Either put your garbage in the bin or take it with you. Stop leaving it on the beach or on hiking trails.\n\n- Learn about hiking before attempting it. We have people going up in jeans and flip flops in the evening and getting stuck on mountains or injured. Some wear running shoes but they don’t have enough traction for the trail\n\n- Shovel the sidewalk in front of your home when it snows\n\n- Stop dousing yourself with axe body spray. \n\n- Understand that Indian food makes your clothes smell. It gives off oils that get stuck in everything. Open your windows and doors when cooking to minimize this as much as possible. You won’t be able to resolve this entirely but do what you can. The skytrain now smells like Indian food even when empty. \n\n- Stop riding your bikes and scooters on the sidewalk. It’s illegal and you have a responsibility to learn the rules \n\n- Stop hiring everybody that you know. Before nepotism was all about networking, but nowadays, it seems to be about hiring Indian people that you know. I am being discriminated by employers because they think I will do the same once I am in. Diversity in teams matters. Indian immigrants don’t seem to believe in this and think all that matters is the most qualified get the job. This is how you end up building facial recognition models that don’t recognize Black people. \n\n- You work at McDonald’s. Stop blasting Indian music. The McDonald’s by my place is blasting Indian music from the back and it overtakes the restaurant music. \n\n- In a work environment, even if it is all Indians, speak English. You ostracize your fellow colleagues and customers. You are also not improving your English skills by speaking in your primary language.\n\n- Make an effort to make non-Indian friends. It’s really intimidating even as an Indian to see large packs of Indian men\n\n- Learn how to swim. Every year we have multiple drownings at a lake because Indian people are unprepared for the reality of the water. This is a basic safety skill.\n\n- Stop staring at women. Even as an Indian woman I get stared at by these guys. Just stop. \n\n- Get headphones. Playing music or having conversations on speakerphone in public places is rude and very inconsiderate of others \n\n- Stop cheating. Whether that’s cheating the system or during classes. We grow up here and environment that even though we can cheat, the culture makes it completely unethical and you just don’t. The consequences are significant. I get it that you come from a country that doesn’t have enough resources for its population, but you give the entire Indian community a bad name when you cheat, lie, and do other unethical things.\n\n- Learn about Canadian values. The Canadian charter of rights and freedoms exists. Under it cases were won supporting equality for women, LGBTQ rights, etc. this is built into our constitution and it’s so ridiculous to come across people who don’t adopt Canadian values. Why choose Canada if you want a culture of what’s back at home. \n\n- I get it that our healthcare system needs to improve but am disappointing reading advocacy for private healthcare in Indian Facebook groups in Canada. Tommy Douglas was voted as the greatest Canadian. He is the founding father of our nationalized healthcare system. For the most part, Canadian are happy that we don’t have a healthcare system like the United States, where your access is determined by your employer or your income. We don’t go bankrupt when we have a health emergency. Go back to India or go to another place where you can pay for private healthcare, but stop advocating to transition our healthcare system to a private system. While you’re at it go look up who was determined to be some of the greatest Canadians.

Canada sucks. Lived here my whole life. 34 years near Toronto. Here's a list of other stuff not mentioned.\n1) terrible school system. Basically go private or subject your kids to liberal ideology and creative learning which puts math and literacy scores at a 20 year low.\n2) terrible Healthcare system. You can wait in line for 1 hour at a walk in clinic. 6 hours at emergency. There's hardly any doctors working.\n3) terrible transit. The public transit is outdated. The roads are always busy with 3 year long construction projects. They actively reduce road lanes to add in bicycle lanes, that are only uses half the year because no one rides a bicycle in -10 degree C. But yeah, we'll still plow the bike lane with tax payer $.\n4) increase in crime. More recent development but lets say it started picking up during the lockdowns in 2020. A lot of immigrants that don't give a f about the law. They don't give a f about the police. They get out on bail the next day. They do crime in broad daylight. It's insane. I don't feel safe. Plus, it's hard to own firearms in canada. You can't protect yourself.\n5) no cultural cohesion. The culture sucks. Bland, boring, fake.\n\nHonestly, stay away from Canada. The only thing it had going for it was it polite and safe. But now it's a crime spree out there. Last I heard, 55 car jacking happen everyday.

1) Toronto is poor value. Getting housing of any kind (buying or renting) is stupidly expensive. And the quality you get for the price is lousy. Especially the newer builds, which are just thrown up as quickly as possible and sold to investors. Policy measures generally all seem to serve to just inflate the price of housing further. The occasional lip service given to affordability is amusing, but ultimately sad. There are lots of people who really do not want the housing bubble to pop. They will fight against it with all they have.\n\n2) It has become kind of boring. There is lots to do if you have money, but it’s harder to find entertainment on a budget. Even the free stuff like parks are filling up. Stuff like sporting events, eating out, going out is very costly across the board. Even the “cheaper” stuff is expensive. It seems like a lot of local culture is disappearing. Even the cool neighbourhoods are filling up with the same chains. I think the high commercial rent and bureaucracy is deflating a lot of would-be entrepreneurs. Most landowners seem to just be banking on cashing out their land for condos.\n\n3) Canada overall has a high cost of living compared to salaries. In the US you can find lower cost of living areas that still give you a real city experience. And in Europe you can be poor but still live a decent, if no frills, life. In Canada the basic necessities are all expensive. Phone bills, grocery bills, rent, insurance are through the roof. Domestic travel is expensive. And the dollar sucks if you want to travel abroad. Health care is free but good luck finding a family doctor or waiting 8 hours in the ER these days. It’s expensive to be poor, or even middle class.\n\n4) Most of the Greater Toronto Area, outside the core, is soulless suburbs with awful transit - very “American” except with worse traffic congestion. You will need a car, which is another huge cost. Row upon row of old cookie cutter suburbs with the same crappy houses. Good luck walking anywhere, and if you do you will need to walk down boring, treeless arterial roads with cars zooming past right beside you, and cross giant eight lane intersections that were never built for humans on foot. In a rainstorm or on a fall evening you have to be really careful not to be run over by aggressive drivers.\n\n5) It is hard to raise a family in an apartment here. You can do it but it’s not very easy, and also you are still kind of judged for it. Lots of young people are feeling stuck and are deferring or avoiding starting a family. Buying any type of house, even a basic townhouse, requires pledging your soul to a bank by taking a massive mortgage with eye watering debt in a volatile market. But few apartment buildings have the kind of sensible gentle density, the family unit sizes and the common amenities, like little courtyards with jungle gyms, that you might find in Europe. No one ever contemplated that anyone would ever desire to raise kids in an apartment. It’s just a cultural thing that has worked its way into how things are planned and designed.\n\n6) The transit system is ok by North American standards but awful by international standards. There are only two real subway lines, one stub line, one line that is permanently out of service after a derailment, and another line that was supposed to open a couple years ago but still has no date for opening. The subways go out of service frequently, sometimes for the dumbest reasons, and then it is a zoo of shuttle buses. The streetcars are nice but so slow. The buses are fine if you find yourself dreaming about riding a daily herky jerky rolling tin of sardines. They are building a lot of transit but it will take decades to get done.\n\n7) There is still a lot of cool multiculturalism and opportunities to experience different foods and cultures - one of the best things about Toronto. Increasingly though it seems to be losing the fun vibe of the 90s, when everyone celebrated each other’s backgrounds and was chill. It seems the immigration is not as broad based anymore and also people are importing a lot of their “old country” grievances here. The immigration system also kind of preys on people abroad by selling them a false fairy tale, so they end up dejected when they arrive and see how things really are.\n\n8) This one might be controversial but it’s kind of an ugly city. There’s nothing particularly of historical meaning or value. Some of the older neighbourhoods are kind of nice, but the last 25 years they have only built giant glass skyboxes, one after another. There aren’t the cool “missing middle” walkups like in NY, Chicago or Montreal (or even LA). There are very few buildings with much architectural character. Some of the buildings they deem “heritage” here are an embarrassment.\n\n9) For safety, honestly on this score I think Toronto is not bad. There are not too many real “ghettos” and it’s night and day compared to much of the US. With that said, there is more vagrancy and social issues these days, with tents and such. It’s very sad but the shelters are full, lots of homeless go into the libraries, parks and transit system. It does make it harder to enjoy these public amenities safely. It is nowhere close to Europe where you might let your kids run free around town. Canadian parents still helicopter their kids and the place again is not designed to really be safe for kids, in the same way as Europe.\n\n10) Finally, a bit of a double edged sword. Toronto had a lot of youthful energy - people coming here from all over. It is definitely not as sleepy as many parts of the world. With that said, it is becoming a bit of a transient place (minus the world class experiences like London or NY). If you are from elsewhere you might find it hard making and keeping friends. I’ve seen lots of people struggle because it’s is hard to build a strong social network. We have a very “shallow” culture here - people are extremely polite but not overly warm and hospitable. We treat one another kind of like neighbours - meaning we’d like to have a cordial, drama-free coexistence and otherwise kind of stick to ourselves.

Lucky you , you did not stay there in the winter or else you would have committed suicide ??.. only job in the winter is to pee come back & watch TV & blow every day snow from the drive way … yes every day ? but I do not live in Canada, I have many family members living there I keep going there as well , I am settled in the US .. but the so called problems of yours in Canada is the same here in the US as well but for me these are the things I love love out here …. Particular about timings , no one comes home without calling , every one is of same standard, kids don’t have to study like donkeys day & night … ( for what ) … out here to have a RV, a boat , suv , saloon car , a bike for summer ride are within every ones reach … at-least that was all my dream … I live in a city yet I have a private 1/2 acre private plot whereas in Mumbai I will have to be a film star ?? here there is no hanji hunji .. I hated the most …out here anywhere we go we take our token number & we are looked after accordingly lastly out here in the west the most amazing thing & the most important thing in life is .. let’s say your business is lost or your job is gone your neighbour’s don’t care you can start from scratch again .. I always thought Trump was being dumb when he said, “they don’t send their best ppl” until I moved to Mexico and cross Paso del Norte once a month. Every month I take a bus up to Juarez and I ride with these migrants, and let me tell you something… they’re not all women and children. About 60-70% are young LITERAL thugs. I almost got jumped by a group of four of them when I arrived to the Juarez bus station for the first time. Mexicans are tired of these ppl as well, don’t get it twisted. 90% of Mexicans I’ve talked to don’t want them in their towns bc they say that since they’ve arrived muggings, burglary’s, and r@pes have severely gone up. In the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s most of the migrants were just ppl who wanted to work, these ppl that I’ve met time and time again talk like the US owes them and has to let them in. It’s crazy. You don’t realize it until you see them and meet them. That’s not to say there’s no good ppl in there, there is. But most are thugs.

Let me clue you in on something! I once was transported to an American hospital on Saturday morning and was discharged by Monday afternoon. I do love Canada , it was my first love moving from poor, war ravaged country in Vietnam. But it is no longer the country that I used to know. I've lived mostly in Vancouver and Toronto and I can tell you,If you got a family and you're not making 10-15k/month, feesl like you're just scraping by. Tdot was good when I moved there in 1984,TTC rides and cup of coffee used to be just a quarter and houses were just about 100k on average. Now its almost impossible to live near the core of the city to buy a house unless ure making high six figure or move out to smaller cities like Brantford or Windsor to buy one. Not only that but nothing is letting up here, food , insurance, gas ,taxes we gettin hosed to death here. After 40 years here, think Ive seen enough,Im cashing out my house in Vancouver, shipping out to Eastern Europe to retire.

This is nothing... Go visit Surrey or Abbotsford in BC, Canada. Largest population of East Indians outside of India. I do have a few issues... if it's a multicultural country then come on Canada, letting in more of one race over another is unfair and unwanted. I don't want to see Chinese and East Indians making up the entire population of Canada in 50 years. I also want to say FUCK the relaxation of motorcycle helmet laws for Sikhs.
