Now, the government can pay unemployment and healthcare for people who were paying taxes! Then there is revenue lost because National Parks and Federal common spaces are closed. Canada has known for decades that we have put too many eggs in one basket - selling our resources primarily to the USA. We've had tariffs before and worked with them. Yet we still keep selling to the USA. This time is different. In conjunction with the tariffs, we have an American administration that is flat out insulting Canada. Saying we wouldn't exist economically if it wasn't for the USA. It's at a time when the USA won't promise not to use military force to annex land (Greenland) from a decades old ally. The resources we have are wanted by many countries if the USA does not want them. It does mean much work within Canada. We need to get our AB-BC pipeline finished as well as the new sea terminal so we can ship our crude oil and natural gas to Japan and if need be, to China. We finally need to get out pipeline to the Atlantic coast finished so we can supply the UK and EU with our products. We need to double our rail capacity for shipping potash, uranium, rare minerals to Asia or Europe. Just as Trump hopes for a golden age of American companies coming home and building new plants in the USA, this will be a golden decade for Canada to create transportation corridors to get our resources to other buyers. America will have to look elsewhere for his raw materials. And we all know what that is - RUSSIA. They've already offered their rare minerals and crude oil. Canadian here. I'm gonna buy whatever my wallet can afford. If it's American made and is 5 cents cheaper, I am buying it over the Canadian product. As a Canadian who has lived my whole life here, in my opinion there were two major factors that need to be highlighted that started this mess: fiscal policy and focus on fringe politics. First, Canada came out of the 2008 meltdown relatively unscathed due to following a markedly different strategic path than other major countries, namely tight banking regulations as well as 15 years of paying down the national debt. However, several years after 2008, sentiment shifted to adopting the same MMT-led fiscal policies as other nations: lower interest rates and deficit spending. Secondly, at least 10 years ago, there was a major political shift to start emphasizing fringe social issues (climate, race-based, gender, etc.) instead of standard issues such as the economy or military to name two, and it was strongly evident in academia and in the media. The result was little governmental, public or media attention being paid to core economic concerns such as the massive growing government and consumer debt levels, highly inflationary housing market, or decreasing productivity. When COVID hit, the government further doubled the existing federal debt and when they found that unsustainable, opened the doors to massive immigration levels to bring the Debt-per-Capita ratio down which while helping in that one metric, has further inflated the housing market all while forcing wages down. We now have unsustainable public debt levels, unaffordable housing, decreasing wages, decreasing productivity, and a troubling reactionary political swing towards extremist right-wing ideologies. Top that off with the US administration seeing Canada is on an economic precipice and threatening to take the country over, there couldn't be a more perfect storm.

New York City voters need to remove those members of the City Council who are supporting this nonsense. These Council members care not one iota about the safety of our streets. I hope that the federal government can charge them with obstruction.

If Canada cuts down on those selected immigrations but still takes in refugees, it’s only going to make anti-immigrant sentiment worse. Everyone is saying it's not their jurisdiction to build houses, but we all know someone has to do it. Selling houses that look like birdhouses for a million dollars and renting them out for 90% of people's income is unsustainable. The Canada we knew is different now. Provincial conservative governments and city mayors are playing politics with people's lives.
