Canada already had tariffs on certain U.S. goods before the recent trade disputes escalated in 2025. Historically, Canada has maintained tariffs on various American products to protect its domestic industries, particularly in sectors like agriculture and manufacturing. For example, under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA and was signed during Donald Trump’s first term, trade between the U.S. and Canada is largely tariff-free for many goods. However, Canada has long imposed high tariffs on specific U.S. products outside of these agreements, such as dairy, poultry, and eggs, under its supply management system. These tariffs can reach up to 270% on milk, 245% on cheese, and nearly 300% on butter, designed to shield Canadian producers from foreign competition.\n\nAdditionally, Canada has applied tariffs on other U.S. goods over the years, often in response to trade disputes or to balance economic interests. For instance, before the latest round of tariffs in 2025, Canada had tariffs on thousands of product categories, though the exact scope and rates varied depending on the goods and trade agreements in place. Posts found on X also highlight sentiment that Canada has had tariffs on U.S. products like dairy and cars for decades, with some claiming rates as high as 25% on U.S. vehicles—though this may reflect specific cases rather than a blanket policy.\n\nIn contrast, the U.S. generally did not impose broad tariffs on Canadian goods until recent actions under President Trump, who introduced a 25% tariff on Canadian imports effective March 4, 2025, prompting Canada to retaliate with reciprocal 25% tariffs on CA$155 billion of U.S. goods. This retaliation built on Canada’s existing tariff framework but escalated the scale significantly. So, while Canada did have tariffs on U.S. goods beforehand, the current trade war has intensified the situation far beyond the pre-existing measures

You mean Justin Trudeau‘s response not Canadians and certainly not mine. This is an underhanded way of taxing the people nothing more. Levy and tariffs against the United States in retaliation has little to no effect in a positive way but it will hurt Canadians in a big way Even more than Trump‘s tariffs will have you forgotten that our current trade deal that Trump hates so much was actually created and signed into love by him? Poilivre won’t help us either. I can pretty much guarantee you he’ll out the same way as Trudeau but he will throw you a bone in here and there and no, I am by no means liberal. I’m not conservative. I’m not NDP. I am a free singer. I am a Canadian and I am tired of politicians, bullshit lie cheat, steal. It’s all they know.

CNN is so full of shit they can’t even talk the facts of Donald Trump getting himself in this shit. Pink suit mama Paula is stuttering all over herself. The first thing she says is how Trudeau spoke of how it’s going to be hard on Canada and then stuttered about it being hard for Americans. But she FAILED to mention that Canada has vowed to be there and make amends for its citizens unlike America whose government has hung its citizens out to dry. CNN also failed to mention ton that Trump signed the current trade agreement when he was president for his first term. Never thought I would see the day CNN would skirt the issue trying their damndest not to use the words the rest of the world is saying and that’s “What the fuck Donald?” Shame on you CNN. You’re the reason the right information isn’t being put out there.

the current trade deal with Canada and Mexico is something trump bragged about when he negotiated & signed it 6 years ago. Trump called it the USCMA. Less than 1% of fentanyl comes across the northern US border. we can't refine light crude oil we pull out of the ground here so we buy more than 50% of our heavy crude oil and natural gas from Canada. Canada will turn off the pipes and sell the heavy oil and NG to Europe. The second oil supply was Mexico who plans to sell their oil in Europe too. It will be extra cold in the midwest and east coast this winter without fuel oil.

I am Canadian, and I want to speak to the USA, as a concerned citizen who valued the relationship that we once had between our two countries: please realize that we do NOT want to declare this as any form of “attack”, that these are solely defensive measures against your current administration’s lack of respect towards us as a people and as a country. \n\nPlease rest assured that we KNOW that not all of you voted for Trump, that there are those of you who realize what your current president is truly doing and do not support it. This is NOT about fentanyl. This NOT about money and how much each country was giving whom. We had a respectable trade deal that we were following, previously signed by Trump. We have always had a positive relationship together, business-wise and friendship-wise. Please also realize that, once your administration is no longer in control of our narratives in such a destructive manner, or it gets replaced by one that reverses this destructive policy, we will definitely reconsider our former relationship and we will work towards rebuilding it. \n\nIt is unfortunate for both sides here. We are aware of that. But “Canada Strong” is our way to remain forever a sovereign and free nation. Nothing more, nothing less. Always remember that.

You can't ever debate a liar. You cantbein unless you lie first and don't stop lying. When world leaders try to use facts in any argument against Trump is like debating a liar. The stupidest person in the world who signed current trade deals is the stupidest president in the entire world. Stop using facts. Start calling him the name he hates the most, STUPID. Until you play his game, you lose, WE lose. Wise up
