I’m a 53 year old Canadian. I went to college on an athletic scholarship & lived there for 10 years after turned professional in my sport. Why, why, why - with all the problems going on in the world right now to tackle - why would you want to start a trade war with your closest trading partner & most loyal ally? Not to mention that your list of Allies is shrinking daily. This is not going to end well for either of us. \nI just arrived home from a trip to the grocery store - making sure nothing in my cart said “ made in the USA” on it due to the new tariffs that began today. \nThe irony is, many of the states where Trump won by the biggest margin, are the states that are going to get hit the hardest from Canadian retaliation tariffs ( Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana, the Dakotas - just to name a few). A lot of farmers in those states are going to be hit extremely hard with the fertilizer tax. After Canada, the next 3 largest Potash producers are Russia, Belarus & China. So , good luck \nWhen the cost of fruit & vegetables skyrocket across the US. Maybe you’ll put a little more thought into your vote 4 years from now.

OK woke Trudeau, who is about to get replaced - remove tariffs targeting US businesses for the last 3 decades, like the 200%+ tariff on dairy products from USA, then we can talk\n\n...and YES we will deal with Russia because they are the only country who didn't take a red cent of aid from USA - their fertilizer is far cheaper than Canada's fertilizer.\n\nI'm speaking to Canadians - especially the truckers whose bank accounts Trudeau froze - vote out the woke Canadian government!\n\nAs far as CNN goes, you are traitors - you would betray USA because the dummy you wanted to win failed against Trump.\n\nThe stock market going down has far more to do with short supply of chips - that is why tech companies were hit heaviest. I can only hope that Europe and the UK will not wait, but choose for a preemptive tariff. This way in total $1.5 trillion of US business will be hit, in a combined strike of China, Mexico, Canada and the EU. This Bullshit of Trump has to stop.

I live in Nashville, TN USA. I am so sorry Canada is suffering due to Trump. I do not support this move on Trump's part. I never voted for him. I have known for many years he is a dangerous narcissist. Canada is our friend. You have come to our aide in times of trouble. Our forest fires, 911 when the planes hit our twin towers. Trump wants a 4.5 Trillion dollar tax cuts for the wealthy. He sees tariffs as a way to make up some of that money alone with huge budget cuts to many of our programs. Trump is an unreasonable person who only thinks about himself. I hope he will eventually be impeached. I do not blame Canada. I blame Donald Trump and the the Republican Congress. This is a coupe going down in our country and it is sad to watch. Take good care.

The fentanyl excuse is just that an excuse, trump wants to make money from tariffs to give a huge tax break to the billionaires in the USA including musk, he is not worried at all about fentanyl, he doesn't care about other people, but he does care about tax breaks for himself and the billionaires who support him. Trump is talking out of his ass. We are responsible for less than 1% of fentanyl. We pay more money to states than states pays to us. We helped with 911, their wars and their California fires. We invested Canadian money, & time & lost Canadian lives. When is USA paying us back ???? . \n\nTrump has sold USA to Russia. I see all these other comments saying how polite and eloquent he is compared to Trump, but you can seem polite and screw people over at the same time. I'm just confused on the admiration for Trudeau in the comments, because I haven't heard anything good about him or what he's got going on. You sit there spending 0 on your own military and live off us like a leech. You want to talk about hurting American families, lets talk fentanyl. Let me explain the trading relationship briefly that occurs between Canada and the US for context. \n \nCanada Has a LOT of natural resources, more than our domestic manufacturing base needs (Uranium fuel, Lumber/paper products, Steel and other metals, Fertilizer for farms...etc). Therefore we sell those raw materials to the states where they are manufactured into goods, which we then buy back. a LOT of American service companies like tech, media (And yes, even banks)...etc also operates in Canada as well. (For the auto sector the parts flip back and forth across the border like 8 times) \n \nThis relationship alone has the American economy see a large trade surplus with Canada, however there is another element to it: Energy. \n \nCanada is also home to a LARGE amount of really cheap renewable hydro power in the east, and a LOT of oil in the west, due to a lack of infrastructure we really can only sell that oil to the states and therefore it is done at a discount. America refines this cheap oil into gas and is a large part of the reason why American gas is so cheap. They use this energy to power the same factories mentioned above. (Oh and also the NE states import a lot of that clean hydro electricity for the same reasons) \n \nThe US Buys SO MUCH of that cheap energy from us to power your industrial base, that it swings the numbers on the trade balance into a small deficit for the USA. (41 billion out of a TRILLION dollars total trade, or about -4.1% of total trade so literally a pretty small deficit) It also swing back and forth every year so \n \nThen comes Trump. He wants Canada as a 51st state and own the entire continent, therefore he manufactures an excurse that our border is leaky and that migrants and fentanyl are flowing over. (In actual case migrants and the flow of Fent is about 1% the amount that's crossing at the Mexico border but he needs an excuse) \n \nHe therefore puts 25% tariffs on us. Those tariffs will hit Canada harder than the 2008 financial crisis just for scale. \n \nOh and also for the most part American Refineries literally cant process any other oil than ours or Venezuela's because its thicker so tariffs on our oil will also really increase the priced of energy in the states by a huge amount just for the LOLs. As we've seen during the post covid recovery, since gas is priced in to the supply chain at every step (Manufacturing, transportation...etc), any increase at the pump will snowball into higher costs for everything at the store, on top of the extra cost of the tariffs on consumers. (Since every step will need to add it into their markup.)

canada and mexico are just whining. trump just want to share the american economic pain with his closest brothers and have equal fair trade. no one talk about the offers. they didn’t do the offer so they get hit with tariffs.

Dumb move, Trudeau. Trump doesn't fear measured responses; he's not a normal person. He only understands if you hit him back much harder than he hits you. \nCanada should NOT impose retaliatory counter tariffs that harm CANADIANS (Or do like China and impose 75% Tariffs on US items Canada can easily buy elsewhere). Rather, Canada should shut the OIL spigot and cancel electric feeds into the USA. RIGHT NOW. THAT would have the required effect and NOT HARM Canadians.

So we import Lumber, oil, cars, and more from Canada. So gas is going up Lumber is going up, and cars are going up. The last Trump admin Trump hit Canada with a 25% Tariff on steel, Canada then slapped in response a 25% and dollar for dollar Tariff on US products. I'll say it again Trump does NOT know what a Tariff is or works. So if your in a hurricane state and are re-building your getting hit with a 25% plus increase.
