Then the Italians 'invaded' New York; now it's pizza and pasta in Little Italy. Then it was the Chinese; now every city has a Chinatown. Then it was the Japanese who we sent to camps in the 40s; now we drive their cars. Then it was the Vietnamese they hated because they were fleeing war; now we get a $15 haircut from the woman at the mall. Then it was the Mexicans; now we eat the food from the farms they work at. Then it was the Arabs; now we're fighting for their statehood. Then it was the Koreans; now we have their appliances in our kitchens and cell phones in our hands. Now it's the South East Asian's turn at discrimination and the labelling of those "very dirty people." You'll get over it soon enough and become friends with the Pakistani restaurant owner down the street, or you'll move to Woodstock and enjoy your cultural homogeneity, before the next wave of "others" from some new place around the world threatens your sense of 'I was here first' mentality and ownership of being Canadian. If you had visited Canada 500 years ago, you would have seen Indigenous tribes living on this land with their own cultural values. Two hundred years ago, European culture became more prominent, but it was still a very different place from what we see today. Family values were strong, and who your family was often determined much of your future. Now, Canadian culture is changing once again. The arrival of Indian immigrants will inevitably influence Canadian culture, whether people like it or not. Some may try to resist—perhaps through a kind of “Trumpism”—but that will only provide temporary comfort. In the long run, Canadian culture will continue to evolve with the influx of newcomers. Today it is Indians; in the coming decades, it may be another nationality. The key point is to embrace change—and perhaps change ourselves in the process. For example, the rise in homelessness is tied more to social and economic issues than to immigration. Family structures among white Canadians are becoming less central in people’s lives, and religion is also losing influence. Parenting values are often shaped by fleeting psychology trends and “helicopter parenting,” leaving many children without the strong foundation they need. My car has been broken into atleast 20 times in 5 years and 3 months ago a older Indian man broke into our house and was wearing my sister's clothes sleeping in her bed. He went through all our stuff and even ate food out of the fridge. So violating and frustrating living in Brampton lately.
